Brahma or Buff Orpington for kids?

biddyboo
my dogs would LOVE it if the girls dressed up the chickens instead of them! I guess both breeds are good and you just have to wait and see what you get. Maybe I should get some of both? That would be really neat actually!I don't think I will be able to pick now with all the great things said about both breeds.

we have 2 kinds of orps! nice ones and Biatchy ones. The nice ones we hatched and petted and picked up from day one. They let us reach underneath them for eggs without fuss and never complain when we hold them..the next batch I got when they were at the point of lay. Now if you dont tuck your hand in your sleeve reaching for that egg-you wont have a hand to come back out!!! I love them though--Id go BO's My 11 yr old has 1 for herself and they love eachother:)

Your daughter is adorable !!!!!!!!!!!!!!
My 2 Buff Bantam Brahmas are NOT nice, they complain awfully and loudly about being held. I was hoping for gentle, oh well! (From My Pet Chicken.) Those and the bantam EE are the only unfriendly chickens I have. My kids named the EE "Evie the Evil EE"

Just my 2 cents
I vote for silkies!!! So cuddly and docile but lets be honest they are NOT exactly egg laying machines, mine lay like a dozen eggs then go on a long break to be broody!

My Light Brahma is very sweet with a lot of personality. She can be touch and go on catching her, but once you have her, she talks to you constantly, has never bothered either of my daughters (4 and 2)
I've never had Orps, so I can't speak for them. I am considering more Brahmas for myself.

How about both???

That second photo is absolutely adorable, both of your daughter and the chicken. Cutest thing I have ever seen!

We have BOs and they are sweet. They are probably the friendliest of our chickens. Someone told me their black star is really friendly but ours is so-so. So much depends on the bird. I've heard delawares are friendly.

But as to liking to be held, I think that varies from bird to bird.

That beautiful little girl looks like a natural chicken charmer!

I began with a Buff Orpington. She was adopted, but ended up being a real lover.

Then I raised three Light Brahmas from age four weeks. They were as affectionate as kittens from the very beginning. They still will jump into my lap on command.

Out of all of my five Wyandotte pullets, only the Golden is as affectionate as the Brahmas.

If you want my vote, go with the Brahmas! I still cannot resist those big, floppy feathered feet!

I have a little black Frizzled Cochin Banty pullet. She's adorable and doesn't mind being picked up, isn't nasty and doesn't peck at you. No objections to being held. Plus her feathers make her look like a fat round black ball....that put her beak in an electrical socket. :) I also have a non-frizzled little Cochin Banty who also is very tame. I think the smaller chickies are nice for the little kids...especially girls.
LOVE your little girls' eyes !!! She's ADORABLE !!!
