Pic heavy!
Got a new trio of bantam buffs this past weekend and wondered what more brahma-trained eyes think of their type. The previous owner did show, but I'm not into showing. Like all my others, they're just pets. Still, I'm curious about their quality, as to my untrained eye, they look beautiful..round, wide, fluffy, wings tuck, tails look full but I'm not sure about them as they're still nervous around me and wouldn't raise their tails for anything.
Sorry about the picture quality..the lighting was horrible in the coop and they wouldn't hold still for me.

Not showbirds. Narrow, sparrow headed, male has really poor color in his hackles, pretty pinched tail on the male and one of the females. You live in Lucasville, Ohio. You are smack dab in the middle of some of the best/biggest shows in the country. You have a huge, great show right in Lucasville. Check it out. Look at the Brahmas. Your eyes WILL be opened.

Tim

P.S. Sorry if I sounded like a jerk....I did not mean to. I usually try to control myself when someone asks for opinions on their birds. You are fortunate to be in an area where good birds are avaliable.

I think the Lucasville show is October 5th. It is the ABC semi annual meet. Gary, correct me if I'm wrong on the date please.

Young Buff cockerel for some color comparison to help illustrate what Tim is saying.

Thanks, I appreciate honesty! Like I said, they're just pets and I'll never show them. It's nice just to know where they stand. I actually do go to the poultry shows down the road to look around but never paid attention to brahmas since they're a new addition for me. I'll be sure to check them out this October.
And thanks, dak, that helps. His color is actually more impressive up close, but the dark hackles don't go nearly that far up his head.
Thanks, guys.

Well the good news is my Blue Columbian Brahmas have started to lay, the bad news is I still haven't got a male Light Brahma to put over them. Dang it. We are supposed to pick up one next month on the way back from the beach.

my roo is now about 18 weeks old how long before he crows?? he gets so frustrated that the smaller roos can all crow and he cant. he just sorta clucks and whistles. he is the biggest chicken i have even at his age.

Interesting. How can you tell when a chicken is frustrated?

Tim

he will watch the others crow and then fluff up for a good crow (all those neck feathers standing out, stright up on tip toe, face to the sky) and "squak" noithing near a crow comes out he will try several times..lol its very comical actually, then he will come look at me and start cherping at me like no fair i cant do it. i have 8 roos 3 of which are younger than my brahma. and the 4mo millie flur even started crowing all ready. im begining to wonder if HONK *whistle* is all he is ever gona do.

As a general rule, bantams crow several months before largefowl do. You have nothing to worry about...give him a few more months.
