Brahma Thread

I don't usually like to get involved on these sites a lot but I do like to read them. Everyone is always asking for comments on their birds and most of the more experienced breeders on here don't want to hurt anyones feelings which is good. I thought if I could figure out how to put pictures on here I would show a few of my birds that I have had a little success with. Don't really use this for a standard unless this is the direction you want to head. If you just want some Brahmas for laying and to admire then you don't necessarily need Brahmas that look like this. I just wanted to let people look at the other end of the spectrum.

For our UK friend. Large Lights frequently win top honors at some of our largest shows here. I would be hard pressed to describe a 13 or 14 pound Cock or a 10 pound hen as a "bantam crossbreed". BTW, most historians acknowledge that Brahmas were here before the UK. We sent them over and the UK crossed them with Cochins. That is where your VHs originated, and why your standard was written to acomodate the VHs.

On that same "bantam crossbred" line the brahmas were the largest birds here for a good many years. They eventually lost that title to the Jersey Giant, which was bred into existence to replace the turkey as a large table bird.

As one of the biggest breeders in Europe and producing stock for clients who show and win at the nationals im very impressed to see after 10 years of hearing nothing my lines are now appearing in the US. Those Black/Turqoise and BSO chicks JHOUGHTON are amazing. If anyone wants to question breeding or make disrespectful remarks on these lines pls feel free to contact me personally as these are the best brahma's the USA has ever seen. They are true to size and type theyre not bantam cross breeds like most of the us brahmas and have winning lineage. Sjisty i believe you contacted me last year for eggs so they cant be that bad! Those that knock these birds are people that have very limited knowledge on colors and genetics. Youve only got to see the true size of these babies to realise their potentional. I wish you JH all the best showing these lines this year as your going to knock the banatm crossbreed standards straight off their feet..

As someone who's been known to think outside the box on occasion, I guess my scepticism raises when the photos provided concentrate on day old chicks, or half grown young birds. Show me some good quality photos showing the type and size of the adults that produced these chicks. I am ready to be impressed.

Tim I may like to inform you but after breeding and producing brahmas for a very long time for some very highly recognised individuals i have great knowledge on this matter! I've seen the rubbish that's been going for silly money on RBA!! Palomino??? Erm nope that's a horse color not a chicken color, bantam brahmas mixed with cochin and being sold as brahma lf & advertised as true brahma (dp) and the list goes on & after visiting the us to view the brahma types available as im respected for my opinions I've seen first hand and have given many very good advice on picking stock for future breeding program's as it isn't always a case of throwing a Cochin in the mix...Jhoughton has the respect of the ABC and this lineage is a show stopper! I'm aware of your standard colors but if individuals have put an enormous amounts of work into providing new colors and at a size that is true they should be praised as their providing the lineage and new blood to others who wish to upgrade their own flocks! I think instead of people looking for something wrong they should take the time to actually own a couple as the proof is in the pudding as they say! Also I never implied disrespectful remarks were intended. If anyone was to see the size of these birds then you'd be on the same page as me with this!

You may want to update your "great knowledge on this matter". I think you falsely equate backyard hatchery birds and high quality exhibition birds. I think you should have visited some of the big shows here. I'm sure some may "respect you for your opinions." We have a saying about opinions here that I won't share on this open forum. I might add there is way more to a good Brahma than size. I promise you If you had infact seen some of the better lights here, your gums would not be flapping.

For the education of us colonials, and many others, who peruse this thread, please post some photos here. Enlighten us.

I don't have "great knowledge" on this, and don't even know what caused all this flap, but would love for you to post some pics for us stupid Americans to see what the heck you're bloody babbling about!
