The tornado barely missed the expo center. Steve Jones, Monty Fitzgerald, Dave Anderson, I can't remember the others, other than I saw no bad ones on the list. I think the "mafia" issue was that one of the judges' former chickens won everything. I think this years judges were chosen to avoid any possible appearance of that sort of thing. Also its a one day show now.

How important it is to keep two pens going for each breed and variety. It talks about keeping one pen breeding for high quality males and then the other breeding for high quality females. Do any of you experienced breeders think it's a good idea to do that or will one pen suffice? Just wanted to know if it's possible to get nice show quality males AND females BOTH with only one pen.

It is easier to double mate like that. But you CAN single mate any variety of any breed. I prefer to have more than one pen for other reasons though.

Help!! I got a light brahma today & the top of her beak is missing. The lady I got her from said that hatcheries do this? Can anyone shed light on this? My son & daughter are very upset that someone would do this to a chicken.

Interesting. I've only seen the laying factories melt/iron the beak flat. Not take the whole top off. Weird

they do it in hatcheries to prevent feather plucking and pecking, it cuts down on injuries but that particular pic looks very severe, don't usually cut off so much and the beak still seems to have a point, usually its a straight cut

SigningChickens, My God. I'm repulsed and horrified at that hen's beak, and so sorry for your kids having to worry about her. I'm wondering if a beak can continue to grow out? I'd sure call the hatchery and see if they have any idea since they're the ones who disabled her.

Edit: I'm sort of thinking that maybe her beak is already growing back. I don't think a hatchery would take the time to trim it to a point as it appears to me in the pic. Heck, they don't even bother with any anesthetic. Hopefully she will recover from this and will be able to eat pain free soon. Sure is a disgusting practice, huh.

That looks more like a deformity/birth defect to me. It does look bad, however the bird is obviously able to eat and drink. It would not have reached that size were it not. Beaks do continue to grow in a normal bird. They are worn, kept at bay so to speak, by nomal forageing. I routinley trim the beaks of my show birds with toenail clippers to maintain a neat appearance. They continue to grow. All that to say, thats why I believe its a birth defect or abnormality. If it had been trimmed, it should have grown back. Just my theory. Again, the bird seems to be over-all healthy though.

This as Tim pointed out does not look like a trimmed beak, beak trimming is commonly done only in battery hens intended for close confinement in battery laying cages it is done with a hot iron at about 10 days of age and normally is a straight cut top and bottom just to remove the point to prevent injury, that beak clearly looks like a deformity as the bottom looks normal and the top failed to develop it will require some special care to continue to be healthy
