GN, Jimmy Rust has darks also. Dark Brahma bantams are the least popular of the Brahma bantams. I looked in my most recent ABC breeders directory, I can't find anyone in Va. that breeds bantam darks. I found someone in Pa., is that close enough? I could PM you the info if you are interested.

BTW, a breeders directory comes with membership in the american Brahma Club.

It depends on where in PA. I'm in central VA, so southern PA wouldn't be too terrible, I don't know that I'd want to go any further than that. If you could PM the info that would be great! I will definitely look into joining the club. What is the website?

Is there a reason they are the least popular? That would explain why they are hard to find. It seems everyone is breeding buffs. I like the buffs, but I tend to be drawn to things that don't seem to be popular. :)

Thanks again!

They
are the least popular because there are very few that are of the true Brahma type, Broad head, wide powerfully built bodies. If you go to a chicken show there are usually lots of buffs, followed by lights, I have only seen darks at the national show in Shawnee, OK. last dec. I have not been to tons of shows. I don't know if darks have ever been best of breed at any show.

If thats what you are interested in, by all means persue it! The variety could use some interested breeders to improve it.

I will PM you the info.

Welcome to the Brahma thread jenn-E, sugarhillfarm, rabbithaus, and GracieNut!

sugarhill, I was just talking with my husband about Giant Cochins yesterday! It sounds like they have a pretty similar personality to the Brahmas.

rabbithaus, the size of feeders and waterers depends on how often you want to change them. 11 lb feeder would likely last you 2 weeks (if I'm calculating right).

GracieNut, for a small breeding operation, most people get a trio: 2 hens to a rooster.

Thanks! That is good news, considering I have limited space and don't want 30 chickens. :) Right now I'm in the process of trying to convince my husband that we need to become members of the Brahma Club. This is proving difficult considering we don't have any Brahmas yet. :-( But I'm working on him!

Thank PitterPatter! Any ideas as to waterer size? My feed store has 1, 3, and 5 gallon sizes. I was thinking the 3 gallon? It still seems big...

I am also looking for LF Brahmas in MO, TN, KY, IN, IL. But I too want Show Quality birds.

I'm having the hardest time finding any good brahmas.

Well, I do not know about show quality .... they are very rare.
I would, however, like to have some excellent breeder quality LF Brahmas (instead of hatchery stock).

Yeah I would mostly just like as close to standard as possible. Breeder quality is fine too. I just can't find any but hatchery stock. Or poor breeder birds.
