Your best bet might be to road trip to a good size show. Get there early, or better yet make prior arrangements with a breeder.

I posted this in the cochin thread but someone said I might look for answers here. someone in that thread said it was hard to tell without seeing the tail feathers but what you see of the rump is what you see the tail feathers are NOT blocked by the hand.
hi all can you tell me is this a cochin or maybe a mix? pulet or roo? its 14 - 15 weeks old the lacing goes all the way down the middle of the back

thanks for any help erica

Looks like it might be a Light Brahma x Barred Rock-
or the f2 (second generation) in the Creation of Columbian rock......
if I had to guess on the sex, I would say that is a pullet.

Most Roos in the Brahma lines have bigger combs and waddles by 14 weeks.

thanks pandora I was kind of playing grab bag when I got my chicks the feed store had so many different varieties I just started picking the cutestthat chicks down was pure black when I got it, never dreamed it was going to be mostly white.

I think it is a poorly colored, hatchery light brahma. I can't really tell for sure if it has a pea comb . Does it? I don't really think that is lacing, it looks more like stippling. What color are the saddles? I'm about 90% sure thats a light brahma. I don't think a feed store would sell mixed chicks, I think they buy from hatcheries. Not sure about sex. Need to see saddles.

I haven't established what kind of comb it has, it's just flat and red I was thinking it might turn into a walnut comb, but hey I'm new to this and I thought you could see the saddle feathers in the pic. my dh is holding the bird because its camera shy and I have a hard time getting good pics. whats stippling? just a little color along the edges? if so you right the feathers aren't a proper lace. I'll go through mu pics and see if theres a better 1 of the saddle

Yes, if its "flat and red" it is most likely a pea comb.

Stippled--stippling:The effect produced by contrasting dots of color on the ground color of the web of a feather, as in Brown leghorn females etc. : a defect in some breeds.(i.e. light brahma) From the 1998 Standard of Perfection. I parenthetically added the light brahma part. The saddle feathers on a light male are supposed to be black laced with white. On a female solid white. The excess stippling on the pictured bird makes it difficult to tell.

I'm sure it is a super great bird. Its just not colored exactly right for the variety.

Just got into brahmas this year. I got these girls from Fowl Visions in January as day olds How do you think they look for for 5 1/2 months old
