X2 beatiful birds!

aww thanks guys

I just know some people are very obsessed with comparing birds to show birds and standards. I just wanted to state up front before the comments came about everything "wrong' with them that I didn't care
wink.png
I love them for who and what they are regardless.

I had 2 Brahmas, but one turned out to be a roo and I had to take him to live on my family's farm, since I can't have roos here. I was heartbroken. He was my chicken and I love him to pieces! I got to visit him a couple of weeks ago and he's gotten so big! He's about 2-25 weeks now. I have a vid to share. My husband saw him this weekend, and said his crow is soooo LOUD. HE was hunting over a mile away and could hear him crow.... lol

I have one here at home, and would love to eventually get more. I just LOVE this breed.

In these vids, he hadn't seen me in over a month. He is very attached to my daughter and gets very excited when he hears her voice or sees her. It actually frightened her. She is not in the vid though. In the vid, he's with the younger birds because the old rooster didn't like him. Since then, Tempest has been let out with the others and is now the dominate roo. He dominated the big old grumpy roo on the other side of the coop.

Next to an Araucana.

She's only just turned 7 months old, and is still growing. . . Criticism much appreciated.

I know her penciling is exceedingly smudged, sometimes I think she's only part Partridge (missing the pattern gene or something) but my main question is - Will she always have high wing carriage?
hmm.png
She's a gorgeous gal, has a wonderful head developing, but her wings more than half the time are held above where they should be. I don't know if it is because she's young or lazy, but, I'd prefer she hold her wings lower.

I would say her wing carriage is excellent. The standard says, and I quote"WINGS: Small, carried rather high, with lower line nearly horizontal;sides well-rounded; fronts, covered by breast feathers; primaries, closely folded under secondaries." Your bird's wings fit that description almost perfectly-"in my opinion".

She doesn't fit that part.

And compare her to the hen in your Avatar

Your hen has nicely carried wings that allow the entire back to be exposed, and notice, the wings fit snug in there. My pullet has wings that are high enough to rest over the feathers of the main body/back, and as you can see, there's a sort of dip in the body and lots of exposed undercoat below her wings, showing that's where they should be placed.

Here's showing what I'm talking about. The outline is about where her wings should be.

Do you agree?

Its just unusual to hear someone complain about wing carriage being too high in a Brahma. The pullet in my avatar is a bantam and her wing carriage is a little too LOW for my liking. I do like your bird type wise. I guess its good to hold our birds to a higher standard. It is our job to improve the breed. Keep up the good work.

Tim

Okay so your hen isn't perfect, but, your hen carries her wings where they ought to be. Not for the breed, but for her as a hen. (although the primaries seem a little droopy) My point is that my pullet carries hers way above the normal region.

Not meaning to make this a huge deal but, here's a diagram/drawing to show what I mean. The top bird has normal carriage, middle one has too high of carriage like mine, and bottom one has too low of carriage. Now, Brahmas can have higher carriage than the one on top, yes, but the red arrow is there to show the spot between the tail and rear fluff where the wings should meet. We'll call this the junction. A Brahma simply has a higher set "junction" than many other breeds asking for a normal, horizontal or slightly lower carriage. My girl does, but her wings are way higher than that junction.

Do ya get what I mean now? The photos I provided with the black line showing where I prefer her wing also show what I mean - It's where it should normally rest. And sometimes it does, but most of the time her wings sit almost right on top of her back, as shown on the middle right of the diagram.
