There has been some talk here about having problems with mud clinging to foot/leg feathers. Personally I have not had any problems with free ranging my birds, as to any physical or health issues. My birds have the option to free range every day, with the exception of a restricted run out pen when in breeding pens. Now various soil types and drainage might likely have different effects. We have a fairly heavy clay soil here, and just completed the wettest year in recorded history. I do add sand to the breeding pen run outs, as the heavy use in a confined area does wear it down, and helps control mud. Now all that being said, the mud does wear on the foot feathers. If I was showing, I would have to change how I operate. This hen shows the effect of the wet weather we have had on her foot feathers.
okay. I plan on getting maybe 2 pullets. They are beautiful birds! I absolutely love that blue laced! May I ask what your crossed to get that color?

I've never had mud issues with my Brahmas, I just have feather quality issues with my Marans.

Well today was the moment of truth, I got a very nice and accurate scale and weighed my Blue Partridge - At 11 months, she's 8 1/3 lbs. I don't know how much more she's gonna grow, but that's pretty darn close to a good 'ol 9. I hope she does get just a little bigger though.

I live in one of the muddiest places on earth....Wales.My biggest hen, Mrs Grey, Dark Brahma....now nearing 11lbs in weight, also has a stupid amount of leg and foot feathers. Her foot feathers certainly get worn off, but the mud doesn't seem to cause her any great problem, though it does stick to them.

I suspect that there are different types of mud depending on the soil constituents. My mud is dark and VERY deep, but rapidly brushes off when it dries. I don't therefore worry about mud shoes, but it does stain the feathers and if I were showing the birds I would keep them on a different surface for a while.

Curious how many inches on average do you get per year there?

The mud here is also quite dark, dries off quickly, but the only spots where it gets terrible are where livestock and chickens alike would devastate the ground last year. No livestock (four leggeds) this year so it's not near as deep, and most of the birds go around it. So far the rest of the much has been pretty nicely shallow.

Last year -

I'm told 915mm per year.....but we get a lot of wet days and the climate is very cool, so the water does not dry off. The upside is that our grass almost never browns off....I think it did once in 1976....

However....not a lot of sun, plenty of rain.
