Brahma Thread

Thanks for the input on my Brahma and the perch. We're looking at the coop and trying to decide what to do. We're talking about having a low perch 3" - 4" off the ground because the RIR and EE will want to perch on something.

That said - my little Brahma, even after her injury, can fly! A black lab came into our yard tonight, while they were free-ranging, and attacked my birds. All seem to be OK, but I was amazed to look over and see my Brahma up on a garbage can. What a scary event! I was out there with them and saw the whole thing. It happened so fast - the dog came flying out from behind our shed and took after them. I went running and screaming. I'm pretty sure the dog briefly had one of my birds in his mouth, but she got out when I screamed. I don't recall if it was the EE or RIR, but I do know it was one of the darker birds. I'm so glad he didn't get my Brahma - she's been through too much already.

When is a good time to start selling/culling the lower quality LF buff brahmas? I have no clue what I am doing and do not want to get rid of a show stopper and accidently keep a bird that is not good for anything.

If you have the room, keep them as long as you can. Some birds can really surprise you as they mature. Since Brahmas tale a while to mature, you might want to give them that time.

Alright I will give them until the Ohio National in November. Will the roosters get over aggressive with each other?

Brahmas aren't usually too bad, but the more room the better.

I have them in a 8x8 coop right now. There are 16 of them. I will be putting to cages on a shelf thing in there so two roosters can go there. Hopefully my other two breeder coops will be done soon because then four can go in those pens. The breeder pens will be nine square feet. The rest will have to just have to get over their problems. More chicks will be hatching next month.

Get rid of the ones that have very noticeable flaws.. Just don't thin out all the nicer ones too quickly. Remember, Brahmas mature slowly. I've had some late bloomers over the years that have been absolute keepers.

Only one a has a kind of noticeable flaw. It's feet are slightly over feathered. The inner toes have feathers on them. Other than that every one has nothing noticeable. I'll post a few pictures and see what you guys think. Just thought I should add this when do their ear lobes turn red?

Ok so I emailed three people about their brahmas. I asked them all for hatching eggs and I want some one to list who they would want eggs from the most to the least. The people I emailed were John T. Neff, Kim and Kendra Aldrich,and John and Bev Tenneson. I really need to know who is the best breeder out of the three people.

I dont know the third one but I believe Kim would be your best best I also believe I heard that John Neff does not have any buffs any longer I could be wrong,I havent seen Kims in person but from the pics they have beautiful birds
