Brahmas vs. Cochin bantams

I've had small groups of both buff Brahma, white Cochins, and black Cochin bantams. They were all lovely birds! I agree that the Brahmas may lay more eggs than the Cochins, a definite plus. I did like the Brahmas better, but that's just me. All were nice birds, although my two Cochin cocks wanted to kill each other, and moved on to different homes. I've got Belgian d'Uccles, and am sticking with only one bantam breed. Mary

Brahmas just seem like better birds in general. But I have a question for anyone who has an answer. Do specific breeds fight diseases or are more resistant to different diseases than others? If so, where does the brahma stand? Is it a tough Breed or more susceptible? I would love to know! Thanks!

Interesting that you should ask this question. I've had both Light Brahmas and Buff Brahmas over these past seven years, a total of six in all. Of those individuals, only one is left. One died from being attacked by a hawk, and the others all died of disease. Two died of lymphotic leucosis, one died of liver disease, and the other died after being sick off and on for several months, and it was probably LL, also.

It's my opinion that Brahmas certainly do seem to be vulnerable to disease. My one surviving Brahma happens also to be my oldest hen, and she's in perfect health except for a benign tumor over her eye that she's had for over two years, seemingly not causing her any discomfort except for an occasionally runny eye.

I love Brahmas, but it has occurred to me I probably would be smart not to get any more.

This certainly can't in any way be representative of the breed, it being such a miniscule sampling. It's merely one person's experience.

I suggest you take a stroll over to the Breeds forum and find the Brahma thread and pose your question.
