Ah, the world of Facebook. I don't miss it *haha* I have bantam Dark Brahmas, and may get a mate for bantam Light Brahma in the spring. I love the coloring on them, and their shape. They are very buff and proud birds. I will be shipping eggs in the spring. Let me know if you're interested, I will add you to my list.
I can share my hours of research on brahmas with you, but I don't have any brahmas yet, so you should also consider what these knowledgable brahma owners have told you.
Brahmas are an easygoing, friendly breed, but my resources don't list them amongst the 'great pets' breeds. They are cold hardy and heat tolerant. They are NOT fliers, noisy, or flighty or aggressive. They are NOT self-reliant, in order words, they won't fend for themselves very well. They do tolerate confinement reasonably well.
ALL THIS IS OF COURSE GENERAL INFO. ON THE BREED and chickens, like humans, are individuals.
They're ALBC priority is WATCH.
As for where to order brahmas:
Meyers has them in bantam size, but they would be straight run.
Ideal has them in bantam size, straight run but also has them in standard size, all 3 varieties, light, dark & buff can be ordered male, female or straight run.
McMurray has them in bantam, straight run and also has the standard buff in straight run and the dark in all three, male female & straight run.
I plan to order from Ideal, not only for their reputation as being a great hatchery, but because they offer all the choices.
I think they are going to be just the bird I am hoping for.
Now if I could just stop thinking about those Phoenix in McMurray's catalog. Forget about the silkies, I tore that page outta the catalog and threw it away...I can only handle so much temptation!
You'll find that most feather footed breeds cannot scratch around as well in order to forage, so that's part of it. They just aren't as successful at it. My Brahmas are sweet, but not as super friendly, as say, my Barred Rocks. They don't like to be picked up, but are not aggressive in the least.
