Cute story I bet the kids had fun with it.

Yeah I had a lot of fun with those chickens- Everybody who came over there -kids and adults alike- got a big kick outta watching them. Even when I wasn't around - my kids would take over and put on the show for visitors.

cold hot dogs are really gross

I cleaned out the fishing boat many years ago and without thinking threw a rubber worm to the ground. Before I could move a hen took it ran and swallowed. It took her about 24 hours to die and was sick within a couple hours. Our chickens prefer chicken nuggets. The hogs liked hot dogs the best.Leftover pasta is good also.

I think the only thing that could expand and kill them would be beet pulp or if someone used those pellets that expand for bedding and they ate a whole bunch of it.

The only way bread will kill them is if they are fed large chunks of stale bread which become lodged in the throats and they choke trying to keep it away from the others. I'd say the same with hotdogs, with them playing keep away and swallowing large pieces too fast. Hotdogs are full of nitrates and salt, so not the best food to feed on a regular basis.

I'm wondering about this too. What's supposed to be the problem with crickets? Certainly chickens gobble them right down while free franging or sratching around on their own. I turn over boards so they can scarf up crickets and other bugs....never seen a negative effect on the chickens.
