Breaking Ground

Good idea. Interestingly, my 4-H kid picked a vegetable project. In the book there is a list of the usual veg, with various bits of info, including the difficulty in growing the different crops. Cabbage and Brussel Sprouts are one of the few listed as “difficult”. Kid will be planting cabbage (an early variety), hopefully getting a decent specimen by project judging time in later July. But, is planting a variety of veg, so will hopefully have a large basket of veg to bring to the project judging, even if it doesn’t include any cabbage.
Awesome that your kid is in 4-H! I tried to get my 8yr old to join this year but despite his claims of being a "farm boy," he is not.😆. Hes the jock and my nearly 3yr old is the dirt digger.
They are both anxious to get horses but they obviously don't understand the responsibility and chores that they will be doing when we get them (years away). Our dog broke his leg on Sunday and when we took him in for surgery, another family was at the vet hospital with their horse. It had some type of bacterial infection and the bill "began" at $5k. I was floored! I underestimated the potential cost of horse vet care.

Wow!

4-H projects span a huge array..clothes, art, welding, animals, to name a few. There is the “horse-less horse” project. All about horses, but no horse required. A friend has a miniature horse, so that child will do a “pet” project on their mini 13-yo horse. Apparently it is common for a 4-H kid to rent their 4-H horse. It is a win-win. Owner gets their horse fed and attended to by an eager kid, but the kid’s family isn’t responsible for vet care, and does not need to provide space or housing on their grounds.

We visited some relatives in LA the first year our kid was in 4-H. They had guinea pigs and out of curiosity, I wondered if there were 4-H groups in LA - looked it up and there were many in that county!! There is a 4-H project book on “Cavies”, so I suggested it to that family. Not sure if they pursued it though.

Thats very interesting! Some of my sons friends joined this year. I will ask their parents for some contact numbers and see if anything like that exists around us. To be honest, I know how to ride but have never owned my own horse so am clueless to their needs. Our plan was to volunteer at a local farm that offers riding lessons. While the kids get their lesson, my wife and I would offer our help in care.
