One of my coturnix quail chicks died today. It was four weeks old. He was having a really hard time breathing, then started foaming at the mouth, then collapsed and died. What could have caused this? How can I prevent it happening to the others?

I'm sorry to hear of your loss… I'm afraid I'm no quail expert, so I'm going to move this to the Quail section for you. Hopefully someone where will be able to help.

@TwoCrows ?

I am so sorry you lost a quail. :hugs

It is really hard to say why your quail died. Liquid commonly comes out of a dying birds mouth, however usually not long before death.

Other than some sort of genetic thing like congestive heart failure that could cause liquid to come out the beak long before death, heat stroke might do this as well. Was the bird exposed to too much heat?

It is possible the chick had a respiratory infection too. Do any of the others show signs of infection?

A necropsy at the time of death is the only way to truly know why the bird died so young. I am so sorry.
