I sincerely hope that someone can help me here. We had a big upset in the barn with a mink attacking the chickens and killing a few. Our old peacock has disappeared and the young lad (around 2 years old) appears to be having trouble with his breathing - every few seconds he opens his mouth as if to take a breath, i.e. not breathing through his nose.

There are no visible signs of injury and he is eating well. All the peafowl are free range.

I look forward to some helpful advice.

Welcome to BYC!

If he were mine I would *start* by doing a thorough exam which would include, but isn't limited to checking the mouth, throat and eyes for smells, lumps, mucus sores, etc. Then I would weigh him, dust him for mites and lice with poultry dust even if I couldn't see any and I'd de-worm him with fenbendazole 10% liquid or paste (Safeguard/Panacur) at 50mg/kg by mouth and repeat in ten days.

Then I'd follow him around and inspect his poop to make sure it looked normal.

If the breathing problem persists, the very second day, give 1cc of Enrofloxyn 10 % solution orally for 3-4 days. to cure completely and successfuly
