Breda Fowl thread

Thanks. A fellow BYCer has taken care of them for about 18 months while I had surgery and then got their coop ready! They are a bit glum at the moment since they are in quarantine, but I do give them mealworms.....which they love! I love the gentle way they talk to you, it's quite soothing.

So nice you have a BYC friend! My Breda is almost 11/2 yrs old and she never fails to amuse us! At first ours gave us the impression that she was standoffish until that first arrival day she came out of the kennel (we leave the door open to give the chickens a chance to explore) and she sought us out in the other room (Actually the cockerel we had did the same thing). And like a normal outgoing Breda she was looking at our fingers to see if we had something tasty for her to try! She goes up to strangers/visitors with no fear. She curiously goes beak to nose with the next door Chow Chow and another small Yorkie mix through the chainlink fence - she has no fear of anything - except aerial distractions like hawks and helicopters! Because she doesn't get frightened or flap (like skittish Ameraucanas) the dogs calmly sniff her and follow her foraging along the fence. She seems to trust everyone - maybe not safe so I'm glad we have the new fence all around. And the Breda voice is quite unique - never had a chicken with that low grumble sound and you're right - it is soothing.

Thank You

Here are some pics from today....they were following me around while I mowed taking advantage of stirred up buggies. This group of five hens and one rooster will be for sale around the first part of June. PM if interested.

Concentrating solely on the Mottled Breda this season. Here are my girls and their young roo. First babies are already everywhere!

THE MOTTLED BREDAS ARE CAMOUFLAGING WITH THE OUTDOORS BETTER THAN I THOUGHT THEY WOULD. STILL CAN'T HELP ADORING MY BLUE YOU SENT ME LAST YEAR -- SHE'S AN ABSOLUTE JEWEL AS EYE CANDY, AS A PET, AS A DYNAMO LAYER, AND AS A GOOD FLOCKMATE WITH OUR AMERAUCANA AND SILKIES. HAVE YOU EVER HAD A BREDA GO BROODY?

Such beautiful pictures from everyone! Mine are still a little nervous around me, but improve daily, so good pics soon I hope

Also, I have 6 hatching eggs on their way to me, so I'm hoping they will produce a future husband for the ladies...

It'll be nice to work with your younger Bredas. It's not impossible to get older birds tame and comfortable around family members but starting out with youngsters gets so much more bonding done. Our 4-month-olds came out of the shipping box just naturally curious outgoing and people-friendly but I would think growing up in a pen without much family contact would make any breed standoffish as an adult. We spoil and encourage our hens to be sociable and pesty and trusting and they have the backyard to free-range for all the bugs and seeds they can find. We built them a dust-bath box under a canopy to stay dry if it rains.
