Breda Fowl thread

Here are some pics of my Breda's (or Kraaikoppen as we call them in The Netherlands). They're from the new colour black mottled and I've bought them this year. Though familiair with the breed I never had any beore, but I just fell in love with this colour. One of the well known breeders had to cut down and as a member of the breed club I could get his own last breeding trio and a young rooster. A great opportunity and I would be a fool to say no (but had to get rid of the Marans unfortunately). According to him this is as good as they come here in The Netherlands (pehaps he was a little bit subjective, but why doubt him?). So I look forward to a nice breeding season with a lot of chicks!
Compared to my Brabanters they're quite majestic in their movements, relaxed (but alert) and not so very clever. But they do well together and I can have the two rooster together with the flock. So that's a nice temperament too (can do that with my Brabanters too, but never with the Marans). I've got them one month and I'm still sort of "in love" with them.

Does anyone know how cold hardy this breed is? We've been combing the web for info on this breed and have come up with very little in the way of specifics. Everything seems a little vague on them, even on Feathersite and Greenfires pages about them. We've ended up with four of these little chicks and my son has decided to make a study of them (oh, the joys of homeschooling!) rather than selling them. However, not knowing anything about their hardiness concerns me...

Here in The Netherlands they are not very common, but well known (because they've always been around as one of our national breeds). They're supposed to be good winter layers and just as hardy as they need to be for our mild winters (to give an idea: -10C doesn't happen every year). They can be let out during all kinds of wheather and don't have the reputation of being needy or something. And they've got no comb, so that's helpfull too I think.

Does anyone know where I could get some breda? The only place I have seen that has them is Greenfire.

We've been trying to hunt down another breeder, too, just to get genetic diversity since all we have is Greenfire's lines. No luck yet, so hopefully someone else will know of one.

as far as I know greenfire is the only importer of this breed

I believe they also imported a second line so depending on when you got yours could depend on which line you got....

I just had 2 babies hatch from my own babies

. I think it's funny that they are both blue, was expecting at least one black or splash..I will take pics as soon as they get moved to their brooder
