Updated pic on Spike...he is a mottled Breda/Black split so not many body feathers are white but the mohawk is just too much

My split mottled group just started laying. Nothing so far from the Cuckoos. They are a bit different from the Blues imported from Greenfire, which I also have. They are all heavier and taller overall. The vulture hocks are more pronounced, as are the leg and feet feathers, and most have this silly set of cresting feathers on their heads. I am hoping for some great results this year. I don't see near so many "horns" in the combs. I will post pics when the incubator starts chirping!

The cresting is part of the Breda Standard. They call in a tassel in the descriptions I read of the breed. I have got some of the Blue Breda from GFF with decent tassels although it is negligible on many of the GFF Breda I have hatched. The tassel was one of the areas I was trying to improve. I like the crest on Spike. It looks about perfect for the Breda Type. I saw some of the Cuckoos in the USA that had too much crest for the Breed (IMO).

I liked the head on my cockerel. He has the tassel.

There is a histroical Black & White ink image of a Breda pair HERE That cockerel shows to have a triangle Peak at the top of his head from his tassel. That is about what was shooting for. :)

Love the mohawk!

My cuckoo have a crest like your blue boy. I will try to get a pic for you. They are more timid than the mottled and slower to mature. One boy is finally filling out, but they are TALL and ALL legs! The blues have a bit of crest but it needs work. Their comb spurs are too common as well.

I took some blacks from the blue group and put them in the cuckoo pens for some much needed genetic diversity. The best thing on the blues is the white eggs. The mottled are leaning strongly past cream to light tan, which I am not fond of. The cuckoo are not laying yet so we shall see.

Thank you all for sharing your pics and info on the Breda. I have input from owners of the Blue that the hens are smallish and dainty and somewhat docile but I like the whiter egg so ordered a Blue. I love ALL the Breda colors and wish I could have them all but my ordinance has a bird limit. I will be getting a Blue juvenile shipped at around 3-months-old so I won't have to go through the hatching egg/chick stage so my pullet should at least have no visible impairments by the time I get her. What worries me most is the prone-ness to CRD in the Blue Breda. I have a great vet so hope I never have to use him for my pullet. Does anyone have input/experience on Breda health issues?

My blues are healthy overall. The only problem is during cold season I have had some issues with eye infections from dry fowl pox which even with treatment ends up in one eye often going blind. We did try the immunization, but several still get pox anyway so I think I will quit those. It is horrid to ram a dull needle through the wing membrane--ick!
Most of my other breeds go through it just fine even when eyes get gooey and they seem to only ever get it once during their first winter.

Here is my blue pullet, who I absolutely ADORE. She's a real pet, following me around. The Bredas in general are like that, moreso than my other breeds (Sussex, Australorp, Wyandottes, Cochin). I have not had any health problems with them, knock on wood. I also have splash Breda. I have never heard of a propensity to CRD in them. I wonder if it's related to their nostrils, or something with their immune system?
