And I'm also sorry you're having those problems! The only thing I can suggest, is getting some blukote, if you don't already have some, and spray it on her foot feathers. It keeps chickens from seeing the red blood and picking at it. I believe it also helps with healing.

Thx for the input - we thought about BluKote except that we need something to deter her from chewing in the first place. BluKote is good for wounds but we need to deter the picking first.

On another note when we took her to the vet last week for a wellness check she only weighed 2.725 lb. She looks so much bigger because of her slender statuesque stance.

After specifically asking the breeder to send an adult juvie pullet with definitely identifiable sex and waiting 6 months for the shipped order our "pullet" is crowing! This from a breeder who bragged they knew their business! I would've gladly waited an additional month or two for definite adult sexing but the breeder didn't wait. Now we know why the supposed "pullet" had such a slender statuesque stance. We have to re-home the sweetie. So sad but we aren't zoned for all the crowing he's doing! Why do breeders do this to us when we are willing to wait until the sex is definitely established in a hard-to-sex breed?

I hope the breeders is sending you a new pullet free of charge. This isn't your fault. If you told them you needed them to wait until the Breda were old enough to sex they should have declined to sell you the pullet if they weren't situated with the pen space to hold on to the pullets until they were old enough to reliably sex.

Last year I had one lady who wanted Breda would only take pullets. She was ready to take stock right away but I told her I wouldn't guarantee any Breda pullets until they were at least 12 weeks old. She followed up with me every 3-4 weeks while I was growing out chicks asking if I had anything for her yet. She finally got her Breda Pullets, but not until they were over 12 weeks old.

If anyone is reliably sexing them at younger than 10 weeks I want to know what your trick is. :)

Bummer! That's terrible.

I would love to see him, if you could post a picture.

Our "Ilse" is now "Ichabod". His feet are wrapped in first-aid paper tape to keep him from pulling out his leg/toe quills. He bleeds all over the pen floor and the companion Ameraucana is drawn to the blood so we separated them. The tape worked on a Silkie who pulled out a toenail so we tried the same tape on the Breda and it works to keep him from cannibalizing himself yet he has total walking mobility!

He keeps wanting to mount the Ameraucana and flares his hackles at her so he's getting re-homed this weekend.

The breeder was baffled that this supposed "pullet" behaved very much like the hens, even sat on eggs, and was on the smaller side so he was shipped at 41/2 m/o. The breeder called him a "gender bender" whatever that is (?) and said to be sure not to use him for breeding and use him for the pot. Hey I'm glad he's going to a friend's home and not someone's dinner! He is curious, unafraid, non-aggressive to us humans, and let's us pick him up and hold him - those of you who have Breda know what I'm talking about! A great breed - but we can't use a horny bird and aren't zoned for crowing roos!

I can't use another pullet. I got the Blue Am and Blue Breda together purposely to be acquainted "pullet" companions before blending into the outdoor flock but that plan is gone now. The breeder claims a reimbursement is due after all the photos we sent showing that the Breda is neither a pullet nor dead (as they implied outright).

If the reimbursement arrives it will never cover shipping or the hundreds we spent in vet bills and medicine, or the half year wait - the Breda not only had chewed off toe feathers but had CRD, cocci, and round worms upon arrival and the companion Amer had to be treated for cocci and worms as well. I know breeders have a tough job which is why I am willing to pay the asking prices and shipping costs and have had other juvies shipped to me with lice, cocci, worms, etc - it happens. I've even over-paid breeders that went above and beyond duty for their customer service. But it was unpleasant when blame shifted to the customer when the breeder balked at the facts and proofs of their inadvertent errors - I have copies and dates of the bills that the Breda is still alive and breathing thanks to our vet. The breeder was not necessarily dishonest but certainly not willing to accept the errors that came from their court. It was a disheartening experience but it's somewhat over and the main thing is the Breda boy is destined for an excellent home because we aren't zoned to keep him.

We knew Bredas were difficult juveniles to sex and we were clear to state that we were willing to wait whatever time was needed to be assured a pullet. If juvies are sexed at least by 12 weeks old -- our breeder sent our juvie at approx 4.5 months old. Not knowing anything about Bredas I trusted the breeder knew their pullets from their cockerels.

Now these breeding problems is precisely why I find myself too old to tackle chicken breeding - I don't even like hatching eggs or raising chicks. On our folks' farm it was a natural fact of life that you lost chicks and juveniles and I don't like dealing with their demises. Good breeders are so-o-o-o worth their weight in gold for their honesty and willingness to be culpable for their inadvertent mistakes. Hats off to you!
