My splash Breda pullet laid her first egg yesterday.

OK - my ultimate question with first eggs from Breda - how much did it weigh for a pullet and what color was it - white/off-white/matte or glossy/cream/or pink tint?

How many eggs per week average?

Hm, well, I haven't weighed it, but it was almost as large as my layer hens eggs, only more narrow. I got another one today, and just like the previous one, it was a nice pure white (I compared it to my oegb eggs which are off-white), and not glossy. The pullet who laid it is around 5-6 months.

That is an early layer for Breda - I thought 7 months was the average age. Glad to hear the eggs are white as I heard some reports as off-white. I read that pullets lay MED but can lay LG by age one year.

I am so anxious to get Breda next year 2015. Since re-homing our prolific but aggressive Buff Leg we are not getting as many eggs this year so we're really looking forward to having more layers. We were counting on the Ameraucana and the Leg for our 2014 production but now only have the Amer and 2 sporadic laying Silkies to depend on.

Let us know how many your Breda lays her first week? And do you have Bredas isolated or mixed with other fowl?

I have my two pullets in with my Silkies. I knew the eggs were hers because of their size.

It's possible I have a Breda breeder in my own home State but has never shipped anything but hatching eggs. I can't incubate eggs to raise unwanted roos so birds need to be recognizable identifiable pullets probably around 4 month juveniles to ship by USPS. If my home State breeder can't ship juvies by next year I'll have to search out of State. I'm just glad this breed is catching on from all the good things I've researched on them. First and foremost is that they be gentle and under or at 5-lbs to be mixed with gentle Silkies and gentle non-combative Ameraucana (my avatar). The Amer is the only one so far to survive the year peacefully with the gentle Silkies. Had to rehome 2 Legs and 1 Marans in the past two years because of combative/aggressive behavior toward the Silkies and Amer. The 7-lb Marans was just plain MEAN, lazy forager, ate like a PIG! I LOVED my Legs but Mediteerraneans are too assertive for a gentle flock mix - they behave nicely as pullets but once they get to adults they start their pushy behavior. I don't want my Amer to be exposed to any aggressive or heavy LF either because EEs and Amers are mostly non-assertive/non-combative types. Polish and Crevies are docile types too but I didn't want anymore crested/bearded breeds. The Silkies and Amer have enough crests and beards for me to handle for a while LOL.

After your girl's first week of laying let us know her egg number for the week. Supposed to be a non-broody type also so you should get a decent year's total as well.

It seems all newly introduced rare breeds start on the East Coast and slowly make their way to the West. You're lucky to be so close to the East Coast where the rare breeds seem to get introduced. But the lovely Breda have made it to at least one breeder I'm aware of in CA - Yay!
