I love looking at the pictures here! I'm excited b/c I've found a breeder within driving distance, so I begin this year!

Also, a friend has 3 Breda females she doesn't want, so they will have a new home this year....mustn't 'count my chickens' yet............

Sounds like you hit the jackpot!

Certainly hope so! Now I have to read up on genetics etc. ugh

I hated genetics in school and nursing school - could never get to grips with x,y,z etc.

You are going to love your new Breda endeavors!

I remember when my first Breda babies hatched. I told my husband "I'm not sure about this..." They were so much quieter and calmer as little chicks than the other breeds I'd raised, I thought it was an inbreeding issue since they are so rare. No, they are just different. More serene. Best of luck!

Glad to see this thread has some activity again! We had a break in the bad weather we've having and I was finally able to snap some quick pictures.

Beautiful B/B/S Bredas!!! I love the funny single feather some of the Blues get on top of their head. My DH asked our Breda about one funny feather sticking straight up on her triangle crest: "Is that your personality showing?" like Alfalfa from Our Gang?!!! I love the little ear tufts on this breed too when you look straight down from the top of their head. I love our Silkies -- and our Ameraucana (my avatar) is probably the sweetest kindest bird we've ever had but our Breda has just the correct amount of spunk at 4-lbs without being jittery or aggressive. When I hear DH chuckling outside 9x out of 10 it's the Breda making him laugh! Our Breda is over a year old, a very active forager, and moves faster than even our skittery Ameraucana. Don't know if it's just our girl or if all Bredas make other chicken breeds look lazy?!! Very friendly, outgoing, unafraid, and curious breed.

Thank you! I hope to add a black Breda rooster to my flock sometime soon.

My girls don't move fast.

They tip-toe around the yard, and when they absolutely have to be quick they gallop around like no other chicken I have ever seen. It's quite funny.

So - I have a couple of questions for you Breda folks. First - I'm told they are lager than the average chicken. Since I'm building the coop and run from scratch, do I need to make size accommodations? Secondly, are they/do they get broody - or do I need to get a Silkie or some other broody type to hatch eggs? Anything that you can tell me about them is gratefully received - info. is sparse on these beauties.....

Quote: I only have 2 hens, and they are a bit smaller than my Welsummer hen who is about as heavy as a cinder block. Most of their "size" comes from height. They are quite leggy. I have heard that the size difference between Breda hens and roosters is pretty significant, though I've never owned a male so I can't say for sure.
I would think that usual coop size requirements for the usual chicken would work fine for Bredas.
