Breda Fowl thread

They lay well in late winter through spring, but all mine tend to shut the factory down completely when it gets over 100. Not that I blame them! If I had egg boxes in a cool breezy area it might be better, but maybe it has to do with being from Holland. I doubt they have weather there like we do? Once the weather cools a bit, they start back up until molting which tends to be light compared to some breeds who look like they were fed through a wood chipper a few times

I have raised all three colors now and there is no real change in production among them. Started in winter 2012 with Blues from Greenfire. Now I am raising Mottled exclusively. I just sold my last two Cuckoo. There are pluses and minuses to each line. Anyone who would like to compare notes feel free to PM me.

Panting even in the shade today on damp ground.....

This breed is everything you @RhodeRunner @GaryDean26, @chicken danz, and others have told me about them and MORE! Thank you for breeding these gems in the bird world! Extraordinarily outgoing friendly birds PLUS great egg production. The usual heavier heritage dual-purpose breeds are nice for eggs but the lighter-weight Breda has an extra punch of personality I've not seen since the Dominique personality. I've tried many breeds to get the right combination of production, family friendliness, and a light feed bill and the Breda fit my criteria.

Here's our Blue Breda from RFR of CA on the far right with her head down in the container pot busily foraging for insects and weed sprouts. She makes others look lazy! She cracks me up!

All the girls waiting at the back door to sneak in. This breed is NOT camera shy!!!

I swear she poses for me!

The lens of the camera fascinates these birds!

They LUV mirrors!

Our girl sneaks into the house to sit next to me on my computer bench! She doesn't seem to mind petting and snuggling. It is so pleasant to have a bird that seeks out your company and likes human touch.

TY RFR !!!

Sounds like they'll be perfect for San Francisco!!

Well they made liars of me because I swear I have had more eggs daily this week than hens :) Crazy birds just took a few weeks off. Now everyone seems to be back on the assembly line

Yep, my Blue girl from you took a 4-day break last week in the heat and started laying 2 days in a row this week! These are fantastic birds!!!

Does that mean you only have mottled now? Or do you still have a few of the other varieties? Wish I could've gotten a male from you!

Just mottled and mottled splits now. The splits are pure black and breed well into the Blue groups if interested in one of the cockerels. I mixed my blacks into all three color varieties (when I had the three). I have found that the Mottled have much better conformation overall than the Blue line from Greenfire imports, and all three needed the genetic diversity anyway. Below is the father to many of my current Mottleds. He was a split.

Here's my new Cuckoo Breda girl from @RFR of CA

I was lucky enough to get one of the last RFR Cuckoo girls! I LUV the vulture hocks and feathered feet! She is so easy to handle and loves her mirror! "Fear" of humans is not in this breed's vocabulary. We leave her free to roam in the kitchen. A mirror is a very good way to keep a house chicken from feeling "alone" and from roaming into other rooms. Right out of her shipping box we took these pics

Our first RFR Blue Breda girl from last year. She started laying Nov 19, 2015 and still laying to this day thru heatwaves and all. She looks like she's beginning moult or maybe growing new toe quills:

Our RFR of CA Blue Breda last year as a pullet

Does anyone know what you have to have when you show Breda fowl at poultry shows to prove that their a actual breed because their not recognized by American poultry association

Just enter them as Breda . It is allowed . Part of the process of getting them recognized is showing . Plus it can create interest in the breed .
