Lovely! Absolutely lovely! So you are preserving this wonderful BBS variety?! I am so glad to see there are more breeders of these fantastic birds coming forward! What State are you in - and how are your Breda doing in your climate? I lost my Blue hen to a brutal summer heatwave last year. We were devastated. We have a new Blue juvenile on order.

I notice you have a light Blue hen and a dark Blue hen. I love the dark hens for showing more crisp edging/lacing on their body feathers and the darker hackles but no matter what color all the Bredas have such great temperaments. What surprised us was how friendly the Blue cockerel was that we had -- he was re-homed and his new owners have turned him into an indoor/outdoor family pet and absolutely love him!

OUR CURRENT CUCKOO BREDA

OUR PREVIOUS BLUE HEN HAD NICE DARK FEATHER-EDGING

YOUNG BLUE COCKEREL WHO WAS RE-HOMED

A question - have you noticed any hardiness differences between Blue/Black/Splash? It was indicated to me that the Blue's seemed to come out the smallest of the 3 BBS colors and that Blue's were the most delicate of the 3 to raise? Are you getting the desired white eggs from the BBS? I got white shells from our Blue hen and pink tinted shells from our Cuckoo hen. The Cuckoo is a larger bird, lays larger eggs, and has longer vulture hocks. Our Blue's (both sexes and from different breeders) didn't seem to have much to show in vulture hocks and eggs were smaller. In contrast our Cuckoo is very tall. Sorry about all the questions but it looks like you're a serious breeder of these birds and have had them long enough to give an informed evaluation.

Out of my bbs variety my blues and black are bigger than my splash to me the splash was harder to raise than my black and blues and mine all have heavy foot feathering because they were from greenfire farms first import of Breda fowl which have better leg feathering than the second batch they imported and the breeder I got mine from when they where chicks only kept the best ones that had the most leg feathering I hope to start on my chocolate colored Breda project next year I might get some mottled this year

Is Shamrock in Canada?  Are there poultry restrictions shipping from Canada to the USA?

Shamrock sold off all his Breda and Laced Brahma and their website says not to contact them for who they sold their stock to -- the new owner does not want referrals. Sad that another Breda breeder has gone out of breeding the rare Breda. Those of you who are left breeding Breda are going to be looked to in future for preserving this amazing breed!!!! They are a tricky breed to preserve but their quality/characteristics (good temperament, good flockmate, good layer, people/kid-friendly personality, desire to stay close to the barnyard, curious, outgoing, etc) are so worth the effort!!! Years ago in the 1970's the Dominique almost went extinct and only 5 breeding flocks were found in the USA before dedicated breeders brought the almost extinct Dom back into recognition. Dominique IMO have the same type of temperament as Breda but since Doms are no longer extinct, the Breda needs the help now.
