Ooooooo! A striking Black male would make a nice addition to your BBS flock! I absolutely love this breed! Mainly because Breda get along so darn well with the Silkies my DH loves so much. The prolific laying is a bonus too! I wasn't expecting our Cuckoo to go broody but glad she did. She never missed laying every day since starting around late January/early Feb except for a couple days and we were worried she'd exhaust herself. But she went broody even while still laying eggs but finally stopped laying so we're relieved her body is getting a rest now. Our Blue pullet layed for 10+ consecutive months and we feel it contributed to her demise along with a brutal heatwave and possible other unknown health issues. So, having our current prolific Breda go broody is a welcome relief to us.


 
I'm definitely keeping this roo, his colors are so unique. The other 2 will stay to for now, I want to see how all 3 grow ,whoever is closest to the proper standard will stay to. Plus I have 15 eggs from RFR that go on lockdown in a week, so im all excited to see what I get from her mottled eggs

Well, if chicken danz has hit on a possible answer to high Breda mortality in White egg layers and the gene associated with feather growth causing avian leukemia we can possibly relax somewhat about the Pink/brown egg layers in the Mottled variety. It's going to be a long process getting those kinks out of breeding stock but chiicken danz hit on something good about breeding only from genetic stock that doesn't show early death mortality. I don't breed so delving into the genetics and details of avian leukemia or fatty liver syndrome or the other chicken maladies isn't my forte. But if I could breed in my zone I would definitely compile more information. I would personally not worry about meeting standards until I resolved the early mortality issue first and only used those breeders that showed no offspring mortality issues. You are off to a good start with a variety of stock sources. Wish I could loan you my broody Cuckoo Breda to hatch your eggs! She's pretty determined to brood! Even a crowding Silkie doesn't deter her.

I never had a Mottled so don't know their egg color - ask RFR or DC what color they should be. But the Blue/Black/Splash should lay white eggs and the Cuckoos lay pink/tinted (probably a result of the brown egg-laying cross-breed that created the Cuckoo Breda pattern/color which turned the white Breda eggs to pink in the Cuckoo Breda). It was probably a good thing to create a Cuckoo Breda with whatever cross-breed was used in its breeding history because Cuckoo seems to be a hardier Breda than the white egg-laying B/B/S Breda. Just a guess on my part since I never had respiratory or health issues with my young Cuckoo the way I did with the two Blue juveniles we had before. Or maybe I just got lucky with the Cuckoo, who knows when it concerns Breda?

I do love my Cuckoo because she is a sweet flock member, but she is so-o-o-o much shy-er than our Blue Bredas were. The Cuckoos are also taller than the Blues. My Cuckoo pullet was just as tall as the Blue cockerel we had at the same age. The Cuckoo hen also has longer vulture hocks, foot, and tail feathers than our Blues did.





Someone is attempting to breed a Chocolate Breda. That will be a fun project and probably infuse some healthy new genes into the Breda breed. Chocolate sounds like a long project to achieve but certainly I would be first in line to get a completed project bird! The personality is what I'm interested in. Only Breda as outgoing, curious, and people-friendly as the original B/B/S are worth breeding. Egg colors used to be important when I first started with backyard chickens but now I'm more interested in temperaments, laying consistency, and hardiness. I had Marans, different Leg varieties, Ameraucana, Silkies, and Bredas for a colorful egg basket but found all breeds are not compatible in a backyard. That's when egg color/egg size took a backseat to my priorities in a flock.

They are all wonderful varieties because of their non-combative temperaments. Yes, I know, there can be an oddball that won't fit the breed description, but so far I haven't been disappointed in the 3 Breda that have crossed our threshold!
