After pleading from my son and the employee at Rural King, we brought home this single little bantam chick who was left alone in the tank and not purchased with the others of her kind. They were only selling assorted pullet bantams so they weren’t sure what breed she was/is. Looking at the comb and waddles, I’m not sure now if it is a “prince” or “princess” even though it is supposed to be a pullet. The age is about 6.5 to 7 weeks and we are thinking it is a black tailed Japanese bantam. Any help in breed and gender identification would be greatly appreciated.

Wel’ll we kind of think it is a cockerel too, but black-tailed Japanese bantams seem to have much larger combs, so we thought it might be a pullet. It also has tail feathers like a female, but I don’t know when they start looking like rooster tail feathers.

Well, it is a rooster! A couple of weeks ago, he started crowing so that was a dead give away. However, my son took him to the fair and put him in the cockerel class and the judge originally dismissed him because he said he was a pullet, but upon inspection of a feather on the back, he deemed him a cockerel so even the professionals with experience weren't sure at first. Thanks for all the opinions!
