Sadly, I guess frostbite does to chickens as it does anyone. We didnt have a wattle problem. His little comb looked so terrible. I am glad your boy is coming along well. Poor guy. Hope your ankle is better. Stinks being down. Been there.Yes, George is fine now. He did lose all the points off his comb (his beautiful "crown") and the lower half of his wattles. For several days he could not eat off the snowy ground, so we made him a plate of sand out of a planter and fed him separately in the bachelor pen twice a day. He has always been mild-mannered, but during this time he became especially tame, and now runs up to DH's car after work, wanting his special treat. It happened that I had injured my ankle so DH was doing all the chores.
Thanks, getting PT for it. I'll live, lol.Sadly, I guess frostbite does to chickens as it does anyone. We didnt have a wattle problem. His little comb looked so terrible. I am glad your boy is coming along well. Poor guy. Hope your ankle is better. Stinks being down. Been there.
I am wondering, do you know of a good treatment for the comb? Just for future knowledge. I used the blue cream type ointment called Hen Healer. It seemed to help, I jist wondered if there was something better. Thanks. Thanks, getting PT for it. I'll live, lol.
I didn't do anything for George and it healed up just fine. I figured the less I messed with it, the better. I knew it would be very tender and sensitive and I just let nature take its course.I am wondering, do you know of a good treatment for the comb? Just for future knowledge. Yes, I applied the ointment for about 3 days. I just dabbed lightly. I didn't want to male it worse for him but, this has been my first full year.. Still taking everything in. I really can't complain. They have been healthy, and happy, I believe. They have pecks here and there. Nothing serious. I have been lucky thus far. I am a nervous chicken tender though. I give them alot of attention, and seem like I constantly look them over for anything, and everything. Call me overprotective, I suppose. People pick at me for it all the time. Lol. I dont care. I love my chickie babes.I didn't do anything for George and it healed up just fine. I figured the less I messed with it, the better. I wouldn't worry too much about what other people say. They're your chickens. Everybody has their own style. They're yours to enjoy as you wish! Some people dress them up in costumes and push them around in a pram, and who's to say there's anything wrong with that, eh? Some even have them live in the house with them as house pets. There's no one right way to care for chickens, just what's right for you. Enjoy!Yes, I applied the ointment for about 3 days. I just dabbed lightly.
