Hey everyone, I am a new chicken owner. I’ve had my EE’s for a year now and just added more cuties to my flock. I really wanted Sapphire Gems and got a few from the pullet box at Rural King…. I know what you’re all thinking 🤦🏼‍♀️😂🤣. Anyway, two of the three I got do look like Sapphire Gems, but my third not so much! She has copper coloring, unlike the others. I thought maybe she was a Blue Copper Maran, but her head is all dark and she only has copper on her chest. I was hoping someone here can help identify her breed, she is roughly around 8 weeks. You can see one of my other girls in the background.

sapphire gems will sometimes have copper coloring

Thank you all, I steered clear of Rhode Island Reds because I didn’t want a flock personality clash, are blues the same as RIR or do they have more personality from the Australorp? I am posting my other two, cuz now I’m wondering if they really are Sapphire Gems 😬. They are a bit younger than Stormy (my misfit lol).

That’s not true due to a sapphire gem’s genetics. They are a blue rock x barred rock cross. Neither of the parents have any red, so cannot pass it to their offspring. Black sex links are a Rhode Island red x barred rock cross, which is why they have red leakage. Production blues/Rhode Island blues are a cross of Rhode Island red and blue australorp.

They’re a hybrid, so personality will vary. I’ve never owned them, so I don’t have any firsthand experience.
The other two appear to be sapphire gems.

i have crossed certain chickens and a gene showed up that neither chicken had
Did you cross a purebred barred bird and a purebred blue one and get a chick with red leakage?
When crossing two mixes without red, it’s entirely possible to get a red chick. Or a white chick. However, when crossing specific purebred birds, there’s certain traits that aren’t possible in the offspring. Genes can’t come from nowhere.
