Breed Recommendations for a newbie

Question for the Brahma owners... Are the feathered feet a pain? Do they need any extra attention in muddy or snowy conditions? They may be my next addition..

My chickens just started laying but I find one eat it egg so I but a plastic eggs in the two nesting boxes not it seem to stop but today I fond a broken egg all in the nesting box?

I think with new layers getting thin-shelled eggs that might break under the hen can happen. Hopefully it is only temporary and you only have to clean up the mess once.

I think you should check this out! They have full descriptions of breeds, and it helped me select my wonderful hens!
Good Luck!

I'm surprised no one mentioned the Black Australorp. They are the Australian version of the Orpington, beautiful black feathers with a green sheen. Avg 5 brown eggs/wk. Docile and friendly. My Penny and Ari are wonderful!

I love my Black Australorps! I have four of them and they are all laying nice little brown eggs now and are only 21 weeks old. They lay an egg almost every day, and get along well with the rest of the flock. Very glad I chose these to be the most well-represented breed of my flock. Also, they are jet black, with a green sheen, and I have been told that hawks hate crows and the Australorps look enough like crows or ravens that they will keep the hawks away from your flock. Another plus. I was also worried that they would over-heat in our occasional 100 degree temps because of their color, but mine seemed to breeze through the heat as well. Highly recommend this breed!

As you can see I'm partial to the Wyandotte, Blue Lace Red and Columbian. I would have to say "my" BLR are my favorite because my Columbian's seem to have attitude occasionally. I made my decision based on the fact that the breed is very docile, brown egg layers, and a very hardy bird in the winter.

I mentioned them earlier in the thread (page 4). I love mine and what you said is spot one. I have RIRs, Americaunas and Barred PRs, and my Aussies are the friendliest. One bonded to me early and both are the calmest and friendliest birds I have. They're my biggest pullets too, although I don't know if that will last as they all grow. I love mine. It's nice to know others like this chicken too. They seem to be under-mentioned. Good liuck with yours!
