Breed???

I contacted Hoover's Hatchery and they were quick to reply. They confirmed that they're black copper marans. This makes me happier as I lost my black majestic marans a few weeks ago to unknown circumstances. She was constantly broody and a little sweetheart all the time. She'd stand up so I could collect eggs, never pecked me once. I had promised her a few to hatch come fall, then found her gone. I've had Cuckoo Marans that were mean and even meaner when broody on eggs. I let one hatch an egg, she tried killing the chick, every time it was out of her sight to eat/drink, she attacked him, hurting him. I had no choice but to remove her. He grew into a beautiful rooster.

Hopefully by February they'll be laying some beautiful dark brown eggs.
Marans and Cream Legbar are the next breeds to get on my list. I keep looking at various hateries and most seem to be out or limited stock with availability in October. I have to keep reminding myself there will be another spring. I do not have to get them all the first year, lol.

Easier said than done. My neighbor commended me on my willpower the day she walked out of TSC with 4 chicks and I walked out with just my dog's food. The next weekend, I had to do the walk of chicken math shame when I bought 4 bantams at RK after going in to buy our kids some clothes. 😆

How do these little fluff balls cast such a spell on such a wide variety of otherwise reasonable people, lol. :lau

Right?! I literally bought the 4 chicks (last 4 bantams in a bin slam full of NHs, so I had to, right?), but also had to buy another brooder plate, feeder, and waterer. RK didn't have those things in stock so I had to go to TSC for them. $130 and 2 stores later? Totally worth it! Lol.

The tractor Supply by me stopped selling chicks over a month ago. I have a friend that lives near 2 hours north of me and he's keeps calling me to tell what breeds are available near him. I have to hang up on him. Then a few hours later I'm mindlessly scrolling hatchery sites . . I'm at capacity and I know this, why do I keep looking anyway, lol.

I keep thinking our TSC won't have them, then they do. Surely these are their last ones though and when they're gone, they're gone till spring. But Rural King sells them year round, I'm almost positive. So every time I go in there, they'll be there, tempting me with their cuteness!

Oh, that's dangerous. I bought some RIRs from a local breeder a few months ago and whenever she hatches a new batch she sends me pictures. Thankfully she hasn't hatched the two breeds I'm still looking for or I might have to live in my car and give my bedroom to the chicks, lol.

They're beautiful! And the RK employee told you 4 weeks? Lol can you imagine bins full of 4 week old chicks inside the store? 😬 My first bantam group is 4 weeks now, and man can they fly! That would be a thing to witness for sure. The RK employee who sold me my bantams thought bantam was a breed on its own. So there's that.

Congrats on all your beautiful birds! I bet you'll end up with some stunners as you hatch out chicks.
I've had different bantam breeds in the past, some few over a 7ft fence onto the the coop roof in pen next to them. No fun trying to catch them. Now I just have the Silkies, 2 roo and a hen, I lost the other hen about 2 weeks ago. She had always been underdeveloped since a chick, barely gaining any weight. Then about 4-5 months ago, a neighbor's dog and older puppy tore the pen fence open, getting into their coop they share with 7 Egger hens. Thankfully none were killed, lots of feathers ripped out and my partridge Silkie hen had the skin ripped off her back - healed physically. The bigger dog tried entry a week later (pup won't be returning), but it didn't like what was greeting it and ran with a warning bang. I think the emotional trauma is still fresh as they get nervous around our own dog. And now a killer fox is stalking, he's gotten quite a few (ducks mostly) when we were free ranging. I thought hawks or owls were getting them inside the pen because I'm constantly watching the sky. Then we heard guineas frantically screaming and saw the fox grabbing a duck. We tried to get to them but the fox was gone with my duck. We realized the fox was likely the one, not so much the others. Later a neighbor said a fox wiped their entire flock out weeks earlier.

However, these girls will later join my standard pen that has a black Jersey Giant and a blue Partridge Brahma rooster along with the bulk of my hens. At least their eggs will be easier to tell apart as I have no other dark brown egg layers. I just might have to try hatching a few of their eggs, 50/50 chance on the papa.

I feel this on a personal level!
