Breeding Chickens?? My friend knows everything so HE thinks

mom'sfolly :

Dh's friend is an idiot, and a bully.

That is 100% absolutely right and intolerable. He'd better be ready for some re-education if it were me. Idiots I can handle without being too offended but I don't stand for bully's.

EDITED per Speckledhen's correction: 1. The ZW sex-determination system is a system that birds, some fishes, and some insects (including butterflies and moths) use to determine the sex of their offspring. The ovum determines the sex of the offspring in this system, in contrast to the XY sex-determination system and the X0 sex-determination system. The letters Z and W are used to distinguish this system from XY system. Males are the homogametic sex (ZZ), while females are heterogametic (ZW). (source: http://dictionary.babylon.com/ZW%20sex-determination%20system)

. A chick will only be a pure-bred if you don't permit the hens to cross-mate with the roosters of another type.

3. This man has his head up his watootie. Don't bother trying to pull it out - it's not worth the effort. Just smile sweetly and say, "I'll have to think about that". It doesn't acknowledge that he's right (he's not) but he'll think you did.

A rooster's sperm determines the chick's gender. Same in mammals.

That is not true with avians, Jenn. The hen determines the sex of the chicks, not the rooster. The sex of the chicks is determined before she is even mated.

Then mea culpa.

You are correct and now I remember reading an article about a study where the progesterone level of the hen was tweaked in order to get more females from it.

Here is the link to the article:

Now that is fascinating!

At least I didn't think I knew; I knew I didn't know!

And the article about manipulating progesterone levels was even more amazing.
