Breeding Exchequer colored birds for type with a limited gene pool.

Nicalandia: Bill do you still need help with your white Orps? are your buff orps as good as them in type? if so you can create whites also from the buffs...

Marvin I do have a few nice Buffs. The bird in my AVATAR did well last year in the Central Indiana Poultry Show. Got best English.
Then I have this Buff cock. He is a Tony Ewert line. He is a big boy well over 12 lbs and it shows. I see alot of birds that are said to be bigger then 12 but when I look at their legs they do not have the bones to back the advertised weight. this boy here has the bones.

This one here is a Buff Sport. He is a Dec hatch and I took this pic in July. He is a big boy. His dad won the Indiana State Fair Poultry Junior Show last year. His dad is a spectacular Buff orp.

The White Orp hen is near 9 lbs now. She was a last year Aprilish hatch. You can get an idea of the size by comparing the two side by side

I believe the 'Buff Sport" is Golden(Silver/god) boy and he will help me with my idea of creating white orps from buffs....and the help of Dominant white..

why buff? well buffs are almost entirely devoided of eumelanin(black pigment) and they are just gold base, what happens if you instead of gold make them silver? that will make them "White" like below bird, now if you just add dominant white to the mix to remove any black pigment left, it will make them snow white..

after seeing afew of your crosses I believe your whites are based on silver, a simple mating should clarify this, mate a white Orp to a Buff hen and hens should come out looking all white...

Dan I believe said this mix is a Silver based bird. He is a cross of Buff and Black hatchery cock. I have had several say by taking him to one of my Buff Sport will clean out the Buff leakage. I had not tried is yet. I want to use my Buff Sport cockerel with my White hen. She has a speck or two of Black on some feathers. Leads me to believe she is POSSIBLY a Silver based White too. Even if she produces White pullets with Buff shade in them I can use them to this mix. He is 1/2 from one of the best Buff orp breeders around these parts. And the hope is to pull some of those genes out and make a White or two which I can use.

the the Black bird was/is Silver based, that boy seems golden(yellowish color)

the boys will be eather golden like him or buff, but you have 50% chance of a pure white hens..(if they get the silver gene from him)

Quote:
have a few black specks is not indicator of Silver or gold, she could be heterozygous for dominant white, but she has Show Quality type so she is a keeper..

say if you use your golden sport to this hen you have a 50% chance of the hens been gold(s+/-) or Silver(S/-) and the white hen can't do anything about it why? well the will get their ONLY Z chromozome from dad, she can't pass her's to the hens.. but to the boys...

he has good type, you can use him with your white hens, the birds that hatch will be almost all white because his dad was solid black and her mom is also a solid black but with dominant white making her white..

good luck with your projects..

Thanks Marvin! I hope to sprinkle his genes around. I have 2 of these Buff Sports cockerel, one White cockerel, the mixed cock and several Cuckoo cock and cockerels. ALL will get their shot at each of these girls. And will be only keeping the pullets.
These Buff Sports came from a breeder who had purchased Buffs from Norm Pontious. Years ago Norm had some smut in the tails of his Buff line. To rid that issue he took a White Orp and eliminated the smut issue. Now the lady who own's the parent stock has started to get these Buff Sport pop out in 1 in about 15 hatches. She has no use for them. But I certainly do. I just need to wait for these 2 Buff Sports to reach their maturity and desire to breed. I expect next season will be a good one.

I like the EL's also. Haven't seen a black leghorn. A few white leghorn roosters have been winning at the APA poultry shows around here. I wonder how a nice white one crossed with an EL would do? My current EL rooster is a jerk, and one of the things I want to improve is termperment.
