Breeding Pairings for 2015

Mine are 6x4 meters, of course its not the best size for four birds, i didn't know every bird needs 100 square feet when i built them.

Well, Brad Legg will put six hens and one cock in a 12 x 36 pen, that's 432 square feet or 61.71 square foot per bird. Your 54 sf is only seven sf less than that of a major breeder. He puts a trio in a 200 sf pen, or 66.66 sf per bird, so he must be comfortable with around sixty sf per bird in a breeding pen.

So all this makes me wonder about the relationship of square foot per bird and number of hens to cock, and what difference that makes. Couple that with Mindy's observations of different personalities in cocks and how they treat the hens and it all gets a little gray for me.

What I am planning is four hens and a cock in a 12 x 36, that would be 86.4 sf per bird. Now I don't know, hopefully, I'll get some more feedback.

I have heard from a local breeder that older males usually do better as they gets older, so your 4 years old males mostly will do better with 4 hens than the three years old male, that's only if that was right!

My biggest pen is my IB,,I have 3 Peacocks in this pen,all IB,,One is IB Pied, one is regular barred wing, and the last was a IB/BS that is showing more white eye each year. In with them are 7 IB hens,,and 3 IB hens that has white flights. In 2012 this pen did okay,,in 2013 the egg count was down terribly,,this year I did very well with fertility and hatchrate on this pen,,which is a 20x20 ft square pen. This spring I wanna pull the IB/BS male thats showing white eye out so that will leave 2 males to cover all these hens,,which to be honest, this pen pays my feed bill for the year so if fertility goes down some my incubator won't be so overstuffed as we're going to add about 7 new breeding pens this spring and a new building.

Forgive me for going off topic but...

Zaz,,didn't realize I was missed?? Yes,life has been hectic the past few months,,now it's this Illinois burr cold weather. Hope to spend quality time here again now for good. Pea Palace is full of peas and expansion has to be done this spring for sure,so lots of updates will come as spring gets here.

Yes FBC I asked and kskingbee said you had taken up racing. I was wondering about the feed that you were feeding if it helped your fertility?
