Yeah, I read that candling is easier on dark colored eggs later than on white.
You're almost a third of the way through!!! =D

Sad news, i had been having a hunch all day that something had happened to her eggs, turns out i was right i opened the barn door and walked down the aisle to the broody, to look under her. What i found were eggs caked in poo, and her one egg i candled yesterday was gone and all i found was a little egg shell. Then i tried candling the other eggs, and the only dark spots were the poo. Then i came to the one small egg i thought was a dud...SURPRISE!!! I saw development, and when i twisted the egg, the embryo moved with it. So then i went to get more eggs for her, and now she has two one day old eggs, and seven 6 day old eggs. About her eggs, i think something raided her nest, i found full egg shell out of the nest, and her eggs, were clean yesterday, only thing is i dont know what did it, our barn is very secure. Also i was almost positive that her eggs, were duds, but my dad insisted i leave them oh god waiting, and waiting, well we'll see where the road leads her, i can tell shes a devoted mom, to be honest, i think she accidently broke her egg, and the little baby got soaked up by the straw. Maybe the poopy eggs will hatch. Probably not.

I had a hen poop all over her eggs, so I got some wet paper towel and wiped them as clean as I dared. They hatched the next day. I have had rats raid the eggs.
Even another hen challenging her for the nest will make her muscle down on the eggs and in an attempt to protect her eggs , she will often break them herself.

I'm sorry to hear about the egg(s) that didn't make it!!!
Glad about the small one!!! =)
Do you think you need to move her to a somewhat more secure location? With the setup that I have, I would put her in a box one night (with the front cut out of is, so she feels like everything's the same), then put a towel over her the next night, then move her the following night, then uncover her a little bit at a time. (Obviously, making sure she has access to food and water the whole time). I would put her in the brooder I have on my back porch; if I didn't have the brooder, I'd put her in a large cardboard box in my laundry room. That's just with the setup that I have; I know everybody's got a little different type of thing going on.
If your barn is secure, meaning that you're fairly certain nothing got into the barn to get at her and/or the nest, then the possibility must be considered that whatever got to her egg(s) was already in the barn, possibly one of your other hens???
I wish you the best, Hon!!!

we just did a test hatch with some english orpington eggs
all clear
i guess i'll have to trim some butts so the roo can "hit the mark"

Do you really have to trim their bums? I plan for this spring is two fold. One to get a laying flock of colored eggs: Marans, Ameracauana and Olive Eggers. Second is to breed rainbow Orpingtons. LOL. I love the Orpingtons so much! Such beautiful fluffy, sweet birds. They are good layers, but can also be used for meat. Right now I have two Buff Orp pullets and three Lav Orp (English) eggs in the bator. So far all three are doing well. I have an order in for BBS Orp eggs and am trying to get some Jubilee eggs. I only inted to have Orp roos, but do not intend to separate the colors for breeding. Thus, my rainbow Orpington flock. I just want to have fun with the colors. No intention of breeding for a show flock, just good layers with lots of color. :D
