Hi everyone! I’ve been a chicken owner for about 5 years now. I have about 40 chickens, all different breeds. I’ve been researching a good way to make $ off these chickens (so they can finally earn their keep... selling eggs for eating isn’t cutting it
) I’m very interested in selling Silkie hatching eggs. My husband is in the process of building a second coop just for my Silkies. However I’m realizing people won’t want to spend $$ on “mutts” so now I need to learn about Silkie genetics.
I currently have 2 pure white very handsome full bearded Silkie Roos. I honestly thought they were hens until they crowed, they are good quality boys. My plan was to put them in the coop with all my Silkie girls but now I’m thinking maybe that’s not a good idea ... well... bc genetics possibly will make their babies Silkie mutts?!
My Question...
What hens can I breed to my white Roos to produce good quality “pure breed” chicks?
My Roosters: 2 White
My hens: 2 blue hens,
2 white hens,
1 partridge hen
Could I put them all together? Do I need to add different hens/Roos to the mix? Do I have to leave some of the hens out of the new coop? Would my currently Silkie flock be a bad idea if I want to sell good quality hatching eggs? I need help from my Silkie experts! (I don’t currently have a way to separate them inside the coop for breeding purposes, and I don’t really want to... I want them to be free to mingle and have plenty of living space) I can always leave any of the Silkies in their current coop (they are happy there and probably don’t want to move anyway
) and add to the new one for breeding purposes. So who moves in and who stay out?
Thank you in advance!
