Bresse Chickens

Pics
They need more Protein from animal protein. supplement with calf manna or give they Game Bird grower--with animal protein in it.

They will change completely very quickly.
Is the calf manna the same as what Tractor supply sells that has the pictures of animals on it including chickens or is it the calf manna that you feed calfs? We got the smaller bag of the one that has pictures of all animals on it to mix with our feed for our chickens and was wondering if there is a difference.

I just ordered a dozen hatching eggs from Barret Valley Farm this morning for the White Breese chickens. I discovered them on Crags list this morning where a woman down the road from us was selling 18 extra roosters for 30 dollars a piece and the picture of them was beautiful. I had never heard of them before. However she didn't have any hatching eggs yet not till Thanksgiving she said and none of her hens/pullets she had were for sale at this time. So I went looking to read about them and then to see if I could find any hatching eggs and found Barret Valley Farm website. Jon sells a dozen eggs for 50 dollars that includes shipping and extra's. I sure hope I get a good hatch from them. Back to learning about them.

Yes, that is the stuff!

If you can easily get Game grower with fish meal in it, that works too. Almost anyone can get calf mana though.

I hope you get some bresse soon!

Thanks for letting me know about the Calf manna.

We are going to get the game grower tomorrow when we go in town. I got fish food at Tractor Supply yesterday its small round fishy smelling brown pellets for pond fish and put that in their mixture I made up. They like that alot. Got to keep the cats out of it tho till I finish mixing their feed.

They are suppose to send the Breese eggs out tomorow. 12 + coming from Ca to Tx. I hope they have a safe journey here.

400

The flock is much better with the protein boost and now free ranging with my layers.
They love cicadas!

I'm curious, how do you find the Bresse do with heat? I have a breeding trio at my friend's 10 acre farm. We had a few days of 100+ temps this past week and my friend told me yesterday that we almost lost one of the pullets. She pulled through but I'm concerned because we have more hot weather ahead of us. They have a big coop and their run is in the shade. It is a farm with many animals to care for so they aren't babied like my backyard flock but my friend had watered down the pen to help cool them down. I may have to see if she will consider letting me install misters in their pen.

Friday was 104 and Saturday was 108. The bresse have shade and a mister. They did ok, better than French Black Copper Marans but not nearly as well as the Crele Penedesencas.

My friend's 11 year old son is doing the basics with all my chickens at the farm. I keep having to remind him to make sure that they have water and food every morning plus to water down their pens in the morning if it is going to be extremely hot that day. I have the feeling that he isn't always on top of things and maybe their pen didn't get watered down until the pullet started showing signs of stress.

I think that I'll make a check list for him and give him some monetary incentive! It is worth a little money for a little more peace of mind.

That is a great plan! He is learning responsibility at a young age.

I missed an auto water fountain not working until the afternoon even with hourly health checks. I think I need a check list...
