Has anybody read anything about the age that the French caponize their Bresse cockerels? I am pretty sure that I read somewhere that the French caponize their Bresse cockerels at 10 weeks of age. Well, I ended up caponizing a couple yesterday that were 10 weeks old. It wasn't intentional, because I prefer to caponize earlier when the birds are much smaller. I only had 3 cockerels with my 75% pullet hatch, but opted to keep one as a breeder(he weighed 3 1/2 pounds) and caponize the other two. These guys weighed 3 pounds each.....way too big for my liking in terms of caponizing. It seemed that their testicles seemed much farther away than the younger birds, but I don't know if that is because their chest walls are much bigger and therefore further away, or because I fasted them for 36 hours I wouldn't think the fast would be an issue since the testicles are fixed in place. I also caponized Marans which were significantly smaller even though they were the same age, but their testicles were not as deep. . I've got 6 weekers that are definitely going to get caponized in 48-72 hours. Hopefully I won't run into the same issue with the younger birds.
BTW, are these weights pretty normal for this age? These are the first that I have raised from hatch. My breed stock I raised from 2-3 weeks of age, and It seems to me they were smaller at this age.
One last question....how old are your cockerels when they first begin to try to crow? I heard the 10 week old cockerel that I left intact do a kazoo crow yesterday. Maybe he was bragging about the fact that he wasn't going under the knife.
