Brinsea Octagon 20 Advance EX 24 eggs?

Prior to this I have only loaded a dozen eggs at a time. However, this hatch we had ours loaded with 2 dozen, the first one was barely able to get out of his egg! These were 24 large eggs & it he had managed to get knocked over & the egg was laying sideways instead of right side up. Each time he pushed to free himself, he was hitting the other eggs, took him about 3 hours & he finally made it (overall I think it was around 12 hours from the time he first pipped). Once several were out & fluffed I took them out & the shells. The other chicks are still hatching now, and have been able to get out much easier! I told DH I don't think I will try 2 dz again, for me it was so hard to watch the poor little guy struggle do to space! ~~~~ But after seeing the egg carton support system, I am thinking I might try 2 dz using the egg carton method! Just depends what I find that I cant live without at the auction next weekend!

Did you candle your eggs prior to hatch day? I am thinking if I put in 24 but I candle in 8 days...some may not be fertile and can be removed. Then I think it is a week later you are suppose to candle again and remove any more not fertile. I'm thinking at least 2 would be non fertile leaving 22 eggs. This is all new to me...I have my first hatch going now of 13 eggs but have a order of 24 coming in April. Did you use the bars and foam dividers? I don't see how you could fit in 24 large eggs doing that? I read about the egg carton system and have also heard of not using the foam...just the bars. Curious to know how you got your 24 in...mine will be Jersey Giant eggs and NOT small.

I just go this too and have some issues with the recommended 16 eggs at a time. I called brinsea and they said if the moisture wick touches the eggs, they'll go bad. But the middle rows all almost touch the wick. The recommended laying the middle eggs flat but I'm concerned they won't turn properly flat. If I don't use the foam padding will the plop out?
Thank you

I don't like the rails & foam pads as much as using a styro egg carton with the bottoms cut out. This would be just for chicken egg sized ones. I think for hatching it'll prevent freshly hatched peepers from rolling the unhatched ones around as much. Has anyone else tried this? Any feedback? Thanks!

Is this egg carton something you can buy for the incubator or just one you had and it works?

It was one that was given to me - it was bought at a grocery store, I'm sure. Probably WalMart or Winco (large volume, discount type store). I'll bet 2 cartons of 12 each would fit too. I like the styro as it won't hold moisture near as much as paper pulp. I've seen some of the more expensive eggs come in clear plastic cartons that probably would work even better - I just didn't have any of those.

Thank you for the information!

I also saw this you tube video of how she fit 28 eggs in the Brinsea octagon 20

Two 1 dozen cartons will fit in an eco 20. It's the only way I hatch now, I agree those rods suck. The cartons hold the eggs securly and the chicks don't seem to have any problem hatching in the uprite position I set in the cartons and haven't found a better way to hatch. It also makes adding water easy just lift the whole tray out and add water, pop the tray back in and out the top back on. The only downside is it does get crowded when they start to hatch so I pull the dry ones out too. Oh and you can still put some extras in down the middle row and still use the turner.
