So I did supportive care last night... electrolytes in water with a medicine dropper...mashed food with water. She was almost dying in my arms...eyes closed, beak open, wheezing. She did eat a little on her own. This morning she seems a little better. She is still puffy but not panting. Eating and drinking on her own, preening a little, gave me a few clucks. Her eyes and nose are pretty clear. Still sneezing a little. She had some nasal drainage yesterday but seems better. Her crop feels ok. I had a hen with pendulous crop so I know what to look for. As for eggs, she's coming off a long molt. Has laid an egg here and there so hasn't quite regulated herself yet. I'm wondering if this is bacterial now or just a virus? Don't know if I should medicate or not.
Thank you for your help.Getting a fecal float is always a good idea if at all possible.
In the meantime do the best you can to keep her hydrated. The nasal drainage and sneezing could very well be respiratory illness if that has not gone away since you brought her in. Respiratory illnesses have similar symptoms and they can be hard to tell apart sometimes. Mycoplasma is bacterial so usually will respond to antibiotic treatment, but if you are dealing with something like Infectious Bronchitis which is viral antibiotics usually will only offer supportive care to secondary infections. It's hard to know whether to treat with antibiotics at this point without more symptoms or a marked decline. Injectable Tylan50 is the most commonly used antibiotic to treat respiratory illness and is tolerated fairly well.
After you do some research/reading and evaluate her, you may be more comfortable about your decision to treat or wait and see.
Hi thanks for checking in. You're very sweet. She passed this morning. I thought she was making a turn for the better Sunday morning and looked so much better yesterday but this morning it was clear she was dying. I just kept her comfortable until she passed. I think she had a seizure or something right before she went too. It was very sad. How's she doing today?

Thank you.I'm so sorry. This is why I sometimes hate to ask for updates, but we all are here for support. Losing one is not fun. Glad you were there for her comfort in the end.![]()
