Broadcast Feeding Chickens?

Does anyone feed whole grains broadcast style? Pros? Cons?
My flock is free range on about 35 acres of varied forage; grass, weeds, pine trees and brush. I would like to feed them in the field without a feeder through the summer. Wondered if anyone else does this?

I have 5 hens in town...i used to toss handfull s of scratch out for em til the slowed in laying...now a throw out the layer feed same way I did the scratch and they gobble it all...i would be afraid of the increased feed cost associated with other birds eating your feed... I tgunk it would be more cost effective to build a couple cheap feeder out of 5 gallon bucket and an oil pan

If you do this make sure they clean it all up. I used to broadcast feed and then I discovered that some of it was getting a little moldy - so now I just put it all in the coop in feeders.
