This evening my son was out playing with one of our pullets and somehow (he claims not to know how :/ ) the tip of her upper beak cracked and later broke off. Here's the best pic I could get.

Will it grow back, or is the damage permanent? Is there anything I can do for her or things I should watch for?

TIA,
Bonnie

Yes, it will grow back. If she has difficulty eating, file her beak at the tip(use a regular nail file). You can also use super glue on beak for crack/break,(if beak has not cracked off). Holds beak together, until it grows out.

That's reassuring. When I saw the beak, thought it looked like a broken fingernail, and hope it will grow out again.

If this will grow back, is it because it broke off near the tip? I was googling pictures of debeaked chickens. *blech* I assume they must clip the beak up near the beak equivalent of a nail cuticle?

For debeaked chickens they slice the beak off with a hot knife at day old. Yes, they cut off most of the beak so it is permanent. I have several rescue hens with this deformity and it does make it harder for them to eat, but they get by just fine.

Make sure she is eating, beak may be sensitive/sore,concern is she may not eat properly for a couple of days.

I'll keep an eye on her. And maybe give her some wet mash to supplement.

When I let them out this morning, she was stripping seeds off the weeds with the others just fine. Her beak looks less ragged this morning too. I wonder if she did some beak filing on her own overnight. :)
