I broke mine six years ago, I landed on my back on some cocrete with my arms wrapped in a sweatshirt I had been removing while riding my horse bareback...
I took the vicodin for two days, gave that up. Wore the sling for two weeks, gave that up. It was too much hassle. It healed with a big bump and one shoulder lower than the other. I'm sure that's because I didn't wear the sling. I still had pain in it from time to time for about three years. Now it's pain free and my shoulders are even again. It's a continuous healing process for at least a year, that's what my Dr said. That's to heal completely, good as new. Mine took three years, but it varies from person to person.
My husband broke both of his when he was little and he has very obvious bows in both. I have only a little bow that I can see and feel but it's not obvious and no one else notices.
