sooo a week and a half ago my hen had a broken weak shell egg sticking out of her Vent. I got it out successfully and flushed her and kept her inside. Fed her eggs with tums on top for a few days. She successfully laid an egg the other day so I cleaned her up and sent her back outside. She had been inside a little over a week. She laid an egg out there so I thought all must be well.

I go let them out today and she was looking a little dumpy. Another broken egg. Once I get the kids settled I will be setting her crate back up and bringing her back in but what do I do for her? Obviously clean her up, get the egg to come out, flush her again, more tums... but will this keep happening? Is she broken? Will she get better?

She’s not very old, only hatched 4/2017. Very healthy otherwise. A few things to note- we had mites recently and and I found a roundworm in one other hens poop the other day. We planned on treating for worms this weekend. Could these be connected to the weak shelled eggs?

How's the calcium % in the feed you are giving? What Breed is she? Some breeds may need reduced protein and increased calcium (especially production layers). :)

I would not flush the vent, so as not to flush fecal bacteria up into the oviduct. Just feel around to get any remnants of shell or membrane. Give her a human calcium withvitamin D3 tablet once a daily for 2-3 days. You can crush it into a treat or food. Is she on a layer feed with crushed oyster shell available as well? Chickens who have broken eggs inside have a higher tendency to develop reproductive infection or other repro problems. Salpingitis, internal laying, and egg yolk peritonitis are some of those problems.

Thank you! Unfortunately I’ve already flushed her, this is what was recommended last time it happened. The hens are on commercial layer feed and have oyster shell available at all times.
I did find a worm in some poop so we treated everyone for worms. We also realized the first time this happened was right at the same time we moved things in the run and they were jumping from that to the coop so I’m wondering if she was banging her belly doing that or jumping to the ground instead of going down the ramp.
