Broken Eggs

Hello Everyone;
My chickens have just started laying eggs and i always have one or two that are cracked or broken. I have tried to put bedding down but at least one of my chickens scrape all the bedding out of the boxes. Anyone have any ideas to help cushion the eggs when they are being laid.

Maybe you could try laying a old piece of carpet cut to fit the size of the bottom of your nest box under the bedding that you are using?

How many chickens and how many nest boxes do you have?
what are you using in the nest boxes?

My chickens do not like woodchip bedding in the nest boxes, they will scrape it all out. They do like hay and straw. It seems they can make a nicer "nest" with the hay.

When my chickens were just starting to lay, they broke/cracked a lot of eggs. One would go in and lay an egg and then the next one would use the same nest box and re-arrange it to her liking and lay her egg. Sometimes they get a little rough with the re-arranging and break an egg or 2.

Some people have used the plastic Indoor/Outdoor turf fabric, as it is easy to wash the broken egg goop off.

Fold up empty feed bags to fit the size of the box, it's free padding, difficult to scratch out/dislodge, and if they get dirtied you can just pick it up, dirty bedding and all, toss it, and replace with another.
