Broken leg: Can I safely remove the splint after 4 weeks?

Sunshine broke her leg 4 weeks ago. Not sure how she did it. My fabulous vet, Keith Gold at Chadwell Animal Hospital in Belair, Maryland (443 512 8338), xrayed the leg and set it. It's now in a splint.

I have an appointment with him to rexay and probably remove the spint. I frankly don't want to spend the money to have it re-xrayed ($75) plus the cost of the office visit so I'm asking for advice on whether a neighbor and I could safely remove the splint. I don't mean "safely" as in Sunshine would bite us. I mean "safely" as in it wouldn't be sufficiently healed and would need to be reset.

Anyone else dealt with a broken leg on an adult bird that was splinted? If so, how long was the splint on?

I think if it was me I would take it off and put her in a pen by her self and see how she does. If she is not putting weight on the leg at all then I would splint it anothjer two weeks again.
