Broken wing bone and large wound! Corona ointment?

Back on May 11th my 4 month old Australorp rooster was attacked by a raccoon that got in the coop, His wing-bone is definitely broken and there is a large wound where the wing-bone connects to the body (I could see the bone a little before.) I have been giving him duramycin powder in his water and have been using neosporin and teramycin on the wound and wrapping it with gauze and cloth tape. I have also been using poultry aid wound care spray every other day. I have some corona ointment and was wondering if i could use it on the cut since it is thicker than neosporin or teramycin? He's been doing good, eating and drinking fine and walking a little. any suggestions would be appreciated! Thank You!

Hi there, it sounds like you are doing ok with your 1st aid. What is corona ointment??? The main thing to be worried about is infection since you have an open fracture there. As long as the wound looks clean, no foul discharge, black tissue etc. I would just keep on doing what you are already doing. Good luck,

Thanks for the positive reply! I've been trying so hard! Corona ointment is for wounds on horses, cattle, and dogs mainly. Wasn't 100% sure if it was suitable for poultry. the wound looks pretty clean to me but I'm no vet. The skin is missing from the wound so I'm not sure how long... Or if it can ever grow back over. He seems to be getting along great, as if it never happened. Its a bad injury though, its going to take some time and care to heal.

Is the tissue around the wound looking pink & healthy? If so, it will likely slowly granulate to form new skin covering. Whether or not he gets feathers again remains to be seen. Keep the wound covered until it no longer looks raw, infection will be the number 1 enemy for some time. With all ointments for chickens remember that they are 'allergic' to anything with 'caine' in it - novocain, lidocain etc. some topical ointments including some neosporins contain this ingredient, so read labels carefully. Are you still giving antibiotics? I have never been in your situation, but I think I would stop drugs after 7-10 days. All antibiotics will eventually cause diarrhea, so if the poop is becoming really runny, stop the drugs. It's very easy to get a bird dehydrated.
