Broken Wing on Peahen

Thanks for the reply. It's nice to know someone is in this with me. Sometimes I wonder what the heck I'm doing taking on such responsibilities having animals. By the way....how do I get rid that "just hatched" under my user id? Have no idea how I put it there and sure didn't mean to, haha!! Thanks.

Go to Index, then to Frequently Asked Questions, & go down to the 6th question. It'll explain it. It has to do with the # of posts you have, you didn't accidentally put it there.

Yes just hatched is your status for posting. Your posts are counted and once you reach a certain amount of posts it will change to say something else, ect.

I hope your peahen will be able to use her wing just as well as she could before it was injured!

Thanks, I feel better now about the "just hatched". Regarding the peahen, does 2 months taped up seem excessive? Poor girl is a mess trying to preen herself and I'm concerned there could be something happening with no air getting to her skin....poor girl. She is so good about all of it. Sure wish I had a building to put her in that's insulated. She's ok on the closed in back porch but it's a pain keeping cardboard down and cleaning. I'm afraid of these freezing nights since she can't fluff her feathers to stay warm and has no bottom wing feathers which provides warmth to her body. I tried walking her to a pen during the day but she can run like crazy so it's been full time on the porch but crack the windows during the day. Today I'm putting a big mirror out there....she'll think her image is company.

If the VET said to leave it for 2 months, personally, I would listen to them. If in doubt you could always contact them again and bring your girl in for a follow up. I would think they would want to see her again anyway, jut to be sure it is healing well.

I'm sure if uncomfortable for her, probably a bit itchy too (same as someone with a case on a broken bone) but I think she needs time to heal. Have you tried giving her some extra treats to keep her spirits up?

Oh yes, she gets the extra treats and runs for them, LOL!! She's getting spoiled eating the grapes, cheese, bananas, berries, etc; and healthy bread with protein and nuts/seeds I buy special for them. My birds and dog are spoiled rotten.

Yes, I know I need to leave the wing wrapped. I'll call the vet Monday and ask. He treats farm animals and just hope he set it properly. I called bird vets and I'd have paid hundreds of dollars had I gone that route. Thanks.

Just popped in, I'm usually on the chicken sites but find myself wandering now. I never in a one million trillion years thought I would own a peafowl. But they are so beautiful. Just wanted to say I hope she continues to improve. I would take her in for a recheck just to make sure her skin is not irritated/infected. Good luck to you!

Hello and many thanks for the concern. She is still doing fine, bless her heart. Never in a trillion years would I have thought I'd have a peahen in our closed in back porch for 2 months, LOL!!! She's been there over a month so guess she'll stay the duration where she's warm enough in this cold weather. My sister says it's suppose to get down in the teens with possible snow for a couple days next week. I need to change out the cardboard in the areas in front of the windows she spends most of her time. Well, actually she's in front of the mirror a lot now. Don't know why I didn't remember to put one in there sooner. To her it's another peafowl so now she has company. I don't know that I'll take her back to the vet unless I see a problem when we take off all the tape however it's on so well I could need to have it removed by him. I'm praying after all she's been through he set it right and it heals properly. Don't even like to think of what will be necessary if that isn't the case.

So....you do have peafowl now? I love mine...would never be without them anymore. Mine are hillarous. Grown 2009 chicks come running to me or my husband when we walk out the door as do the 3 Spaldings that are going on 7 months old. When he's in the big rv garage the youngsters walk right in. He can chase the other peas out and after a couple times they stay out but not the babies, haha!!! They want to be right there knowing what the heck he's doing. I put them back in the pen nights. I believe them to be about 75% green and oh my gosh, they fly like regular birds. I've been told Java don't stay put even if you raise them and my belief is they fly so well once they take flight, they're lost and don't know their way home. These 3 get up in my lap for food and prefer me feed them from my hand, haha!!! I love my peafowl. (-:

I was just wondering about whether or not they are friendly. I love our chickens. They are so much fun, pretty too, but nothing on a peacock! Now, I have heard that peacocks and chickens can't live together. Blackhead or something? That would break my heart! Do you have to have separate coops? Can they freerange together?
