Brooder pics and a couple questions

I also have used a dog playpen as an intermediate and “run” during transition to coop. chicks can escape (squeeze) through the bars up to 6 weeks in age depending on the breed. my only recommendation would be to consider the vitamin electrolytes in water due to the high temps and also layer of paper towels over shavings the first few days to deter eating the shavings. (it also makes for easy changes!)

If u can try to wrap the bottom of your cage with hardware cloth or even cardboard. Chicks can fit thru an opening that wide. I learned my lesson the hard way lol.

It finally happened. I knew it would be soon and they were jumping and they glide pretty well. It happened yesterday, my sister called me freaking out saying one had escaped. The other chicks were frantic and my wife’s cat was just laying on top of the brooder watching it. Here is the solution. They’re out of the box now since they can escape so they have the whole thing to roam around in.

They sure r cute. I’m glad you didn’t lose any when they escaped. My cats don’t go after the hens but they may go after the chicks. Unless their with a momma hen then the cats don’t touch them. So glad u wrapped the bottom.
