Brooder:::: puppy pads or pine shavings

We are at day 4 with our 5 day old chicks....we are using puppy pads to absorb all the poo and water. We also did this to make sure the girls learned what is food. Any advice as to when we should start using pine shavings?

I switched to pine shavings with no problem after one week.

For the first 2 weeks we did newspaper. Now we are doing newspaper and pine shavings. The newspaper makes for easy cleanup.
