we have two cats and here is what my inside brooders look like. CAT PROOF! I made it from a 'on-clearance-christmas-tree-box' from Walmart and some hardware cloth. works great. also it is long enough that if the heat is too much at one end, they can go to the other. now we just use this one till they start feathering out good then we have a heated one in construction outside. will be finished this weekend for the little guys.

if you look closely at the end without the light, you can see my baby turkens and banties sleeping soundly at their comfort zone.

Here is my chicks brooder till they get a bit bigger.

The wattage on the bulb is only a 60 watt because it is so close the temp stays perfect.

After reading all the pages in this post...took a few nights, I opted for a clear tub (thrift store $1). While the debate continues about newspaper or not, we, feed store owner does it this way, went with the paper.

At night, I switch out the light to red.

Nothing special, but thought I would share. It is a clear storage box. I cut the lid and put in some hardware cloth.

Here's how I attached it.

Now I'm looking forward to getting some chicks in it!

dixie bird.... i keep my feeder and waterer on bricks so they are about head high to the chicks. This keeps some of the litter from getting in the feed and helps keep them from scratching the feed into the liter. Good Luck

eschwaderer, That is really nice. Very neat work, and looks like you have covered all possibilities, with the sliding doors, etc. What are the little round things in the wall?

My little girls (2 & 4) decided that i neded lights for the chicks to see! I had these from underneath a set of cabinets we removed. I tried to tell them that a heat lamp gives off enough light for them but was overruled lol. They picked the green color out too, by the way.
