BROODER thread! Post pics of your brooders!

Pics
You all have some neat brooders. If you are ever in the Missouri area, or coming my way, let me know, I have a job for you to do.

Looks like it outta work. How many chicks do you have in there? I like the idea of the rain shield, --been trying to think of something for shade over part of my pen for summer, and that looks like it would work fine.

Here's mine. (Sorry the photo's sideways, couldn't figure out how to fix it.)

It's an extra-large dog crate, which I lined with aluminum window screening to keep the babies from sneaking out between the bars. I also built a raised floor of 2" x 1"s and 1/4" hardware cloth so I can slide the poop tray out of the bottom without bothering the chicks. In this photo the door is open so you can see the 9" panel of hardware cloth to keep them from escaping when I reach in to do something. The white stuff is shelf liner to give them a soft place to sleep. I have several pieces, and just pop them into the washer as I need to.

That looks nice. I wish I could hatch some chicks or order some more. It will almost be a year. Well I got my last chicks on April 23 of last year! lol

Good luck!

Cody!!

That's a great system. Have you had any problems with the wire floor? I've heard it can be bad. I do have a spare rabbit cage I could use...

i bought a couple of scrap pieces of linoleum at Home Depot for $3 a piece (they're 3ft.x 4 ft. each) I think they were a pretty cheep buy. anyway, i have them on my spare bed and the chickens (6 weeks) jump off the pool brooder and run around on it. they stay on the bed, dont jump down or get into anything. I can leave them out most of the day (and even have left them out overnite) granted, i only have 3 of them in this spare room...

oh and one of them did decide to get on the computer today. as soon as i said how good they are....i heard ding ding ding ding someone standing on the keyboard. so now i put it up sideways when i leave the room. so far they are staying back on the bed. no more surfing. ha.

I decided to try the 1/4" wire after reading about it from a couple BYCers. I think if the mesh is small enough it's not a problem. I had the shelf liner over the whole thing originally, then took out a piece at a time to let them get used to it. These are my first chicks, but I haven't seen problems yet.

Here's mine. I rotate these three pens acording to need. Right now I have chicks in one, a silkie trio in the other, and two brooding silkies in the last one

I started out with this and wound up adding a second one. This is built with pressed wood floor and 1X12's cut at 4' for the side walls. Then I made a frame for the fencing cover.
This worked out for about 2 1/2 weeks, when I was able to finish the henhouse. Now the henhouse provides them with a roomy brooder. I'll finish it and add the nests and roosts, later.

Update on my brooder.
This is my last post. https://www.backyardchickens.com/forum/viewtopic.php?pid=1820799#p1820799

My DBF got the brooder in the shed done.
The chicks seem to love it. It stays nice and warm even when it's colder out. Although we have to keep it covered because it has been really cold lately.
Here are updated pics.

If I don't have it covered, we lose way too much heat. I don't normally have a towel on it, but I have new babies, and it's been really cold the last couple nights. So it's jut for added protection.

On days when it isn't so frigid, it's covered like this.

Right now we have is split in to 2 sections. On the right 5 week old RIRs, on the left 3 day old BOs.

By next weekend my DBF should have the rest of the shed framed in so it can be used as a coop, then we can move the RIRs out of the brooder. I know it's tight in there for them now.

A closer look at the RIRs.
